~ BOOK REVIEW for Miss Understood ~

***(3) out of 5 stars!

Unlike the prior volume in this series, which was an insta-love romance, this story is one of the longest slow-burn love stories around!  Nate and Tillie get the hots for each other in high school, but due to various circumstances, they don't act on their feelings for YEARS!  Even when Nate finally does so, Tillie is more than a little reluctant to get involved with him.  Not that she isn't immensely attracted to him, but she doesn't belive herself worthy of such a great guy; and, more so, worries about what others in their small town will think of him if he starts seeing her.

A lot of the premise was quite absurd, especially the late-night goings-on involving various members of the community.  And the last-minute, before-dawn, total surprise of a wedding was absolutely ridiculous.  There is no way you can get me to believe that Tillie would agree to a wedding without her sister present, no matter how estranged they may have become.  The entire incident with Hannah was also quite hard to believe, although it was fun enough to suspend my disbelief just enough.

Overall, this was a fun, spicy, romantic read with lots of bizarre happenings, but also lots of feel good moments and fun goings-on.  Definitely good for a quick read when you need a break and a bit of a pick-me-up.

BOOK REVIEW

***(3) out of 5 stars

There are four separate stories contained within the pages of this book, each distinct in several ways from the others.  But all involve an innocent young woman and a somewhat scary man.  Each man presents a threat to the woman in question in their story, but ultimately proves to be a protector instead of a destroyer.  Each story comes at it a different way, but results in a happily-ever-after ending.  With lots of hot action included to help keep things interesting, of course.  The fact that each story is relatively short at just a few chapters each makes this volume easy to read in short increments.  They definitely would be good, one per evening for several nights, read as a bedtime story.  And a sexy one at that!  As with any such collection, there were some tales that I enjoyed more than others, some that I found more believeable, some that were better written.  But overall it was a good solid read, and if one isn't too much to your liking, well, it's soon over and you can move on to the next savory morsel.

BOOK REVIEW for "Alien Hope (Alien Invasion, #5)" by Honey Phillips

SUMMARY:

Torn apart for ten years, can they reclaim their love?

For as long as Emlan could remember, T’renan had been part of her life - friend, protector, confidant - but when she tried to show the massive alien warrior she wanted more, he left her. When she heard that he had been killed, she couldn't let herself believe he was really gone.

Ten years later, just as she finally starts to move on with her life, word comes that he is alive. At first she is overjoyed, but the protective warrior of her youth has been replaced by a bitter, angry male.

T’renan never wanted to leave Emlan, but neither could he resist her innocent advances. A temporary assignment guarding trade routes seemed like the best alternative - until his ship was captured and he was enslaved in the mines of Quatar. Only the memories of Emlan keep him sane during the torturous years of his imprisonment, but when he finally manages to escape, nothing is the same. He has lost everything else - is he going to lose her as well?

Fate kept them apart for ten years; can they overcome the distance between them and find their way back to each other?

~BOOK REVIEW for Alien Hope~

Emlan and T’renan are a delightful couple!  Despite having been separated for ten years, under horrible circumstances (him held prisoner in a slave labor camp, her thinking he was dead), the two actually reconnect surprisingly quickly and easily.  It is actually after they are reunited that the trials to their union kick in, coming from a variety of sources.  But everything just serves to help them be stronger as a couple.  The secondary characters in their tale are enjoyable as well, especially Budra, O'kami, and T'gaira.  The story itself is full of intrigue and drama, with several unexpected twists and turns.  But it all eventually leads to a very happy ending for this lovely couple.

I did find the backstory a bit lacking and rather confusing.  I never was entirely sure what their relationship was before T'renan went away.  Did he work for Emlan's father?  Was he her bodyguard?  Her betrothed?  And if the latter, why did he feel it necessary to leave?  None of that was ever made clear, nor exactly what was a L'chka.  (Perhaps some of this was explained in other volumes of the series?  But not having read any of those except for the prequel, I was a bit lost.)

Still, the story was good, the writing flowed well, and the characters were very endearing.  Definitely a sci-fi romance that I would recommend to those who enjoy the genre, and a series that I would be willing to explore further.

BOOK REVIEW for "Alpha's Temptation (Bad Boy Alphas, #1)" by Renee Rose & Lee Savino

SUMMARY:

MINE TO PROTECT. MINE TO PUNISH. MINE.

I’m a lone wolf, and I like it that way. Banished from my birth pack after a bloodbath, I never wanted a mate.

Then I meet Kylie. My temptation. We’re trapped in an elevator together, and her panic almost makes her pass out in my arms. She’s strong, but broken. And she’s hiding something.

My wolf wants to claim her. But she’s human, and her delicate flesh won't survive a wolf's mark.

I'm too dangerous. I should stay away. But when I discover she's the hacker who nearly took down my company, I demand she submit to my punishment. And she will.

Kylie belongs to me.

~ BOOK REVIEW for Alpha's Temptation ~

*****(5) out of 5 Stars!

Holy freaking awesome read, Batman!
Okay, it was somewhat annoying that Kylie often spoke to herself in Batman-esque quotes.  But other than that, she was pretty amazing.  I loved that she was mostly portrayed as a strong, intelligent woman.  Although her interactions with the blackmailers are not entirely the acts of a smart person.  Mostly she just really wants somewhere to belong.

Jackson is the quintissential alpha male.  A lone wolf (pretty much) who doesn't even realize how much he longs for a family.  He's forceful, demanding, and authoratative.  All things the Kylie comes to find she appreciates, even though she herself is a pretty alpha personality.  It really ticked me off that he didn't believe Kylie at the near end, and because of that put her in danger.  But I was somewhat appeased by how much he tried to find and help her.

The secondary characters  chiefly Sam, Jacqueline and Garrett  are also quite delightful, and I hope that we see more of them in future books of the series.

The intrigue of the tale is genius, with a plot you think you know, until there's a twist  one right after another, in fact  that takes things in a different direction.  There's a fair amount of danger, and even some violence, but nothing too dramatic or graphic.

Holy freaking heatwave, Batman!
The love scenes are spicy!  The chemistry between Kylie and Jackson is apparent from the very first moments of the book.  And things just ramp up from there.  He is controlling, demanding, and even punishing at times, but always makes sure that she is taken care of and okay with things.  It is both sweet and hot.

Overall, this was quite the enjoyable read,
and I look forward to reading additional volumes in the series.

Well, it all started with a failed job interview…

He’s insanely handsome with icy blue eyes that can pierce your soul.

Cold, demanding, and distant.
He’s shrouded in scars and wrapped in arrogance.
Working for him is like a fight to maintain my sanity.
If only our fights didn’t end up with me in his bed.
He’s complicated and beyond aggravating.
Why can’t I stop fantasizing about him shirtless?

But the billionaire is willing to throw himself into danger to protect me.
Making it impossible to hate him for long.
So, my one bad decision led to too many to count.
Now, it’s time for me to come clean.
“You’re my boss, my protector, and now my baby’s daddy.”

~ BOOK REVIEW for My Boss, My Protector ~

***(3) out of 5 stars!

This was an okay read, but could have been better.  There is a lot of backstory for both main characters that is dispensed within the first section of the book.  It really gives us an emotional understanding of from where each of them is coming.  But it also kind of bogs things down for a bit.

Evan's character, at least from Sabrina's point of view that we are treated to, was all over the place emotionally.  She describes their conversation as "free, easy, and full of lots of laughter," then in the next paragraph says that there was a "coldness" and "darkness" about him.  I was just left wondering: which is it??  As far as actions that we are privy to, Evan is pretty much just a big jerk, but Sabrina keeps falling at his feet, which was pretty sad for such a supposedly accomplished woman.

Then there is the extent to which she is apparently deeply affected by the loss of her brother in a wartime friendly-fire incident.  To the extent that she obsesses over it, and eventually let's the bad guy manipulate her right into his hands with weak promises of information on the incident.  All this despite having said early on that she "found out how Ray actually died" from some of his buddies who were there with him.  But later there is actually more information that is supposedly discovered, which Sabrina hadn't heard of previously; which just seems odd given her supposed conversations with her brother's buddies in arms.

Let's just say that my willing suspension of disbelief was sorely tested several times.  I especially found it extremely hard to believe that this supposedly brilliant woman would so easily fall prey to the obvious machinations of the bad guy.  And that this self-made billionaire tech guy didn't have more ideas and available resources for locating her when she goes missing.

All of that being said, this was still an enjoyable read.  There is angst and intrigue and passion and suspense.  Not at all a bad way to pass an afternoon or evening when you just want some fun reading without too much intellectual involvement.

It appears from her listing on Goodreads that this is only the second or third book released by this author.  I have high hopes that her future endeavors will just continue to improve, and I look forward to perhaps reading some of them.

REVIEW

***(3) out of 5 Stars

Here's another book that seemed to have a lot of potential, but just didn't do much with it. The main couple seemed to have a connection and quite a bit of chemistry, but certainly not enough to sustain a relationship across galaxies. I really didn't get how this whole interstellar transportation cloning thing was supposed to work, let alone how Evander was saved at the end. The book definitely left a lot of unanswered questions, although it did hint at future volumes to perhaps answer some of those.

I received a free eBook copy of this title from NetGalley & Xpresso Book Tours,

Excerpt:

She wasn’t sure how long she’d been hunched over the white, carved stone sink, breathing and waiting for the shaking to stop. Adrenaline crashed through her veins, her senses registering every sound, touch, smell, and sight around her. She grasped the wine glass and chugged it, letting the rich cherry and tannins drown the bile in her throat. Only after swallowing the last gulp did she look up to see Evan leaning in the doorway.

She sighed and drew her gaze back to the sink. One more replicant to get rid of. But as long as Star Knight didn’t fight her, she could wait until her nerves calmed.

He released a deep breath and moved to the bath. Cass closed her eyes. She didn’t have the strength to deal with him right now. Her house was destroyed, she was covered in bluer-than-Earth blood, and she couldn’t erase the violence she witnessed—and engaged in—from her thoughts.

A rose-scented cloth touched the skin of her shoulder and swept, warm and soothing, down her arm. Keeping her eyelids pressed shut, she released a shaking breath.
Evan turned the facecloth over, pressing a fresh clean surface against her skin. She chanced a glance. The blue was gone, and only faint red streaks remained of the mask she applied earlier. She raised her eyes to look at the man standing behind her, cleaning her shoulder, his gaze fixed on her skin. He looked up, blushed when he saw her staring at him, and turned to rinse the cloth in the bath.

Cass’s breath slowed when he returned and studiously traced the warm, clean cloth along her nape. He pulled it down her arm, leaving her unmarked pink skin glowing from the mud. Evan stroked the facecloth across her other shoulder, clearing the fight and the mask from her other arm. She was breathless again.

She doesn’t expect the explosive chemistry between them and can’t help but wonder if Jesse’s as demanding in the bedroom as he is in the courtroom.
EXCERPT:
His handsome face smirked before he averted his eyes and turned his head, but she could still see the profile of his face. His police uniform stretched across his chest. Wonder if that chest is chiseled underneath all those clothes.
Her ears burned hotter than chili sauce, spreading to her neck and chest. No point in putting on a mask this time, because there was no escaping this. Her fingers found the ends of the towel to cover her naked body, but her legs froze on the spot. “I got locked out of my house.”
“You got locked out of your house…naked?” A grin spread across his face, revealing the dimple on the bottom lip. She wanted to bite it but didn’t know if it was to hurt him or because of the temperature between her legs.
Scowling at his sarcasm, her fingers gripped the bricks of her house and she pulled herself up. “Yes. Why are you even here? Didn’t you have enough of me this morning?
“Never enough.”

BOOK BLITZ for "More Than a Rebound" by Lory Wendy

More Than a Rebound
by Lory Wendy
Publication date: November 26th, 2018
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

“The Rebound Effect” states that in order to get over your ex, you have to get under someone else. At least, that’s what Miles Bedford’s best friend keeps telling him.
So when he’s suddenly thrust back into the single life, Miles has one thing in mind.
The plan is simple, and his intentions are clear. He’s not looking for love.
But sometimes all it takes is one person, and one weekend, to change everything.

Excerpt:

“We can pick this up later,” I said.
We were quiet as we got on I-95, but it wasn’t like earlier in the day when the silence made me want to jump out of my skin. When we passed the exit that would lead us to her loft, Noelle shoulders relaxed, and her lips curled up in a soft smile. I took that to mean she knew I was going to my house, but to be sure, I asked, “We’re going to my place. Is that cool?”
“Definitely.”
And we were quiet again because I realized what I’d said. We were going to my house.
The silence and my thoughts about what bringing Noelle home symbolized lasted our whole ride, only ending when we got inside my place and I offered her something to drink.
I leaned against the counter and rested my head against the cabinet above. My heart slammed in my chest. This was momentous. The importance of having Noelle in my house—in my kitchen—drinking from glasses I bought after my ex left me and took all her things, along with some of my confidence with her.
I felt good—happy despite my nerves. In one night Noelle threw me and my plans off kilter. The guys were right; she had me by the balls. My only desire was to get out of my head and enjoy every minute of our limited time together.

I opened my eyes and found her watching me over the top of the glass. A small smile played on her juicy lips, and she had that look that let me know she knew what she did to me.
