Despite the fact that there’s something almost magic about her food, her father can’t imagine anything worse than her following in his footsteps. And when Pen confesses to keeping a secret from her family, he fires her, ensuring she never will.
Xander Amaro is undocumented but that doesn’t stop Ignacio Prado from offering him a job at his restaurant. For Xander, it’s a chance to make amends and to sever his toxic relationship with the druglord, El Cantil–a man whose been like a father to him since his own disappeared. Soon after, his mother abandoned him too, leaving behind a void that not even his abuelo can fill. Until he meets Pen.

EXCERPT:

The parking lot hasn’t changed; the science building looks the same as that first day of school five months ago. But as I sit in my car, watching girls I met during orientation skip up the steps, hugging their bags, excited to play nurse, I try to convince myself that something inside me has. That today I’ll actually be able to go inside. That today I will stop lying and be the person they want me to be.
Class starts in approximately seven minutes—the class I should have taken and passed last semester, moving me one step closer to a degree in nursing.
Six minutes.
I sit in the parking lot, watching the clock tick down. The car is in park but I can’t bring myself to turn off the engine.
Walk inside.
I turn off the car, reminding myself how much I’ve already wasted on tuition and books.
You can do this. You can.
I reach for my bag.
Get. Out. Of. The. Car.
And then I can’t breathe.
My mother’s shoes.
All I can think about are my mother’s shoes.
How they’ve sat in the same spot by the door for almost twenty years. Scuffed and cracked, the shadow of her foot pressed to the leather even when the laces are loose. I imagine every hallway they’ve ever walked down, every door they’ve propped open, every mess they’ve ever stepped in, every second they’ve held her up when all she wanted was to collapse. Because one of her patients couldn’t remember her face or their daughter’s name or how to speak.
When she lost one I’d wake to the knock of the rolling pin and the smell of dough warming on the hot plate. Sometimes I’d try to take the pin from her but there was something about the force, about the rhythm that reminded her how to breathe. We’d work in silence and three-dozen tortillas later she’d wrap them in foil and drive them to the family. The family that only visited once a month. That would accept my mother’s food without acknowledging that she was more family to the deceased than they were.
And then the next day she would go back to work.
For almost twenty years. She went back.
And if I step out of this car, if I walk up those steps, if I sit at that desk and pretend…how long will I be sitting there before I realize I’m trapped?
I take a deep breath, the scent of a thousand shifts at the restaurant tucked into the fabric of the front seat. Mango and cilantro and epazotetomatillos and roasted pepitas and tortillas. I can’t sleep without those smells tangled in my hair, without those flavors still on my tongue.
So I have to decide what’s scarier: living a life that doesn’t belong to me or losing the one I love. If the truth breaks my father’s heart, I know he’ll take it from me. But if it doesn’t, if he understands, if I can make him understand, I can be free.
I weigh each option, simmering in the anxiety they provoke, in the hope. Because I have to do what scares me. It’s the only way to ward off the helplessness. To stay in control. I always have to be in control.
Which means that today is not the day I go inside.
My stomach drops, my hand reaching to put the car in drive again.
Today is the day I tell them the truth.

A Monster Like Me
(Heart of Darkness, #2)
by Pamela Sparkman
Publication date: Spring 2018
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

“I love the peculiar silence of shadows. They exist, but leave no mark.”
Zeph had been a child, thrust into a war that wasn’t his. When he was older, he discovered he had landed on the wrong side of everything.
He’d been fighting for sweet revenge, because of lies he’d believed—and those lies proved to be his ruin. Falling into despair, Zeph decides living is too painful. So, he writes his final act with poison and chooses to end his story.
But Fate has other plans for Zeph and when he finds himself in the hands of his enemies, he has to decide: Does he want to live? Or does he want to die?
Or maybe that choice is no longer his to make.
Ruled by shadows and armed with secrets he never intended to share, Zeph will be put through his toughest battle yet: the war within himself.
“He isn’t a lost cause. He’s just—lost.”
That’s what Arwyn believes. She sees the monster he has become, but what she also sees is someone worth fighting for. Armed with secrets of her own, she’s determined to help Zeph fight his demons, because there was more on the line than Zeph’s soul. So much more.
Revenge may be sweet. But redemption is sweeter. The question is, can Zeph find the boy he used to be, or will he always believe that no one could ever love—a monster like him.
“You are everything good. And I am everything children are afraid of.”

BOOK REVIEW for "The Boy I Hate" by Taylor Sullivan

*****(5) out of 5 stars!
The Boy I Hate
by Taylor Sullivan
Publication date: August 12th, 2017
Genres: New Adult, Romance

SYNOPSIS:

Samantha Smiles and Renee Montgomery have been best friends for over a decade. They’ve shared laughs, secrets, and a mutual hatred for one person: Tristan Montgomery, Renee’s older brother. He was the guy every girl wanted, and every guy wanted to be, and it wasn’t uncommon they’d befriend his little sister just to get closer to him. Which was exactly how Samantha became Renee’s saving grace. She was the only girl Renee could trust not to fall in love with her older brother.
Until the one night Samantha spent with him alone, leaving her questioning everything she’d ever known about the blond headed heart-throb.

Years later, Renee asks Samantha to be her maid of honor. With no other option, Samantha is forced to drive cross-country with the focus of their teenage ire.

He was her first kiss.

Her only secret.

Can Samantha survive the trip cross-country with the reckless Tristan Montgomery? The guy who did what he wanted, whenever he wanted, without worry for tomorrow? Or will she discover a different side of him. One that’s sweet, funny, and maybe a little bit vulnerable. And fall completely and helplessly in love for the first time in her adult life with the one man who could cause her to lose her best friend forever?

REVIEW:

Oh. My. Gosh.  This book was SO good!  The interaction between Samantha and Tristan was so spot-on.  They had just the right amount of tension and attraction to make the entire story delectable, enough flaws to make it believable, and enough sensitivity and vulnerability to make you root for them.
While I generally don’t like narratives that shift time perspectives, this one really worked.  The author structured it in such a way as to slowly advance the plot from both the past and the present alongside each other.  As we learn more about the past, we begin to understand the current situation better, not to mention the protagonists.
The journey that Samantha and Tristan take together cross-country becomes so much more than just getting from point A to point B.  It morphs into the journey of two hearts, very much separated at first, but slowly overcoming the hurt from years past, the disappointments of life in the interim, and coming together to create something beautiful together.  Of course, there are obstacles in their way, both some predictable and others unforeseen, but luckily they are able to navigate them successfully and not lose each other for good.
This is an author of whom I will be reading more, and definitely a book that I recommend for anyone who enjoys a delightful contemporary romance.

BOOK BLITZ for "Thigh Highs" by Katia Rose

Thigh Highs
by Katia Rose
Publication date: October 26th, 2017
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Romance
Modelling lingerie for her arch-nemesis was not on Christina’s to-do list.
Then again, neither was he.
Aaron Penn might be the talk of the advertising school they both attend, but to Christina he’s just an egomaniac with a cocky smirk to match. Fast forward to the end of term, when a class project gone wrong has her stripping down to a negligee and letting Aaron photograph her to advertise a line of women’s underwear.
She expects suggestive comments and smarmy-eyed stares, but when Aaron gets behind the camera he treats her body like a work of art. Even though all she’s got on is a scrap of satin, the room suddenly feels way too hot.
As the tension between them builds to expensive-panty-melting-levels, Christina finds herself caught between falling for the complicated artist who knows just what poses to put her in, and wondering why he acts like such an irritating hotshot around everyone else.

EXCERPT:

“No way,” I gasp, staring at the very large, very professional-looking camera in Aaron’s hands. “Did you just steal that?”
He looks up after setting the camera down on the desk next to the carefully arranged lingerie.
“Really?” he demands, cocking a brow. “Is your opinion of me actually so bad that your first assumption is to think I stole this?”
I give him a look that suggests exactly that.
“I didn’t steal it,” he confirms. “It’s mine. I…”
His eyes drift to the floor and he takes a moment to heft the gear bag he has thrown over his shoulder onto the desk, turning away from me as he does.
“I do photography sometimes,” he continues. “It’s just a hobby. I was going to come back in here after the shoot and play around a bit.”
“That looks like more than just a hobby.” I gesture towards all his gear as he turns back to face me.
He shrugs, avoiding my eye. “I mean, I have to look good in all my selfies.”
“It’s like being a douchebag is just a reflex for you,” I sigh. “I almost can’t even blame you for it.”
He starts unzipping the bag and pulls out a few lenses. As I watch, it occurs to me that even though we’ve now got a camera and someone who knows how to use it, our problems are far from solved.
“So do you have a C cup model hiding in that bag?” I ask him. “Because if not, we’re still screwed.”
“You must be at least a C cup,” he responds, not looking up from the lenses.
I’m about to ask what that has to do with anything when the realization of what he’s suggesting hits.
Oh hell no.

Immersive Fantasy™ Instructions
Getting set up

These three steps are crucial to ensure you can access the AR content.

1.On your smart phone or tablet, download the Aurasma app from your app store.

2.Login to the app, and register your account.

3.Search for the user ‘MarkedByFate’, and click follow.

Accessing the Immersive Fantasy™ Augmented Reality content

Follow these steps carefully to access the AR content. Additional help can be found on the Aurasma help desk.
1.Read and enjoy the story, and watch for clues to the AR content. These will appear in the form of images with a symbol next to them, denoting the type of AR content. Content viewable includes images (camera icon), videos (movie clip icon), or music (music icon).

2.You will need one device/format to read on, and a smart device to access the AR content.

3.When you spot an Immersive Fantasy™ clue, open the Aurasma app on your smart device.(Navigate to the viewfinder screen if the app does not automatically do this.)

4.Centre your viewfinder on the trigger image. Make sure to include all of the trigger image in the screen. You can view the content vertically/in portrait or horizontally/in landscape.

5.The app will display the AR content in the form of an image overlay, video overlay,or music overlay, as denoted by the symbol next to the image.

6.Enjoy!You can zoom in and out and tilt your camera to fully explore each piece of content. Make sure you have your sound turned on so you can listen to the video and audio content! You will have to continue focusing on the content to keep listening to music/watching videos/viewing images.

7.It might take a little practice – don’t worry if you struggle on your first try.

Troubleshooting

What to try if it won’t work.
1.No AR content is popping up: have you registered an Aurasma account, and followed ‘MarkedByFate’? You must do this to access the content.

2.No AR content is popping up: have you made sure all of the trigger image is in your viewfinder?

3.No AR content is popping up on my kindle/e-ink device: please adjust your device screen brightness. If the screen is too bright or too dim, the image cannot be recognised by the app.

4.I can’t hear any sound: check the icon. Only video/music AR content has sound.

5.I can’t hear any sound, and it should be playing some: please ensure your volume is not muted, and turned up.

6.The content keeps disappearing: ensure you keep the viewfinder focused on the trigger image so that the AR content will remain overlaid on your screen. If you move too far away from the trigger image, the AR content will disappear.Activate it again by re-scanning the trigger image.

7.Can I access the eBook and the AR content on the same device? No. Aurasma uses your device camera, so you will have to read the book on a difference device to the device you are using Aurasma with.

8.It’s just not working – I’ve tried everything: Please refer to the Aurasma help files, and contact their help desk if you are still having issues. Whilst extensive testing has been performed to ensure maximum device compatibility, regrettably not all devices may be compatible. Best compatibility will be found on pixel based screens with good brightness levels.

BLOG TOUR & AUTHOR INTERVIEW with K.C. Tansley for "The Girl Who Saved Ghosts (The Unbelievables, #2)"

The Girl Who Saved Ghosts
(The Unbelievables, #2)
by K.C. Tansley
Publication date: October 17th, 2017
Genres: Mystery, Time-Travel,
Young Adult
She tried to ignore them. Now she might risk everything to save them.
After a summer spent in a haunted castle—a summer in which she traveled through time to solve a murder mystery—Kat is looking forward to a totally normal senior year at McTernan Academy. Then the ghost of a little girl appears and begs Kat for help, and more unquiet apparitions follow. All of them are terrified by the Dark One, and it soon becomes clear that that this evil force wants Kat dead.
Searching for help, Kat leaves school for the ancestral home she’s only just discovered. Her friend Evan, whose family is joined to her own by an arcane history, accompanies her. With the assistance of her eccentric great aunts and a loyal family ghost, Kat soon learns that she and Evan can only fix the present by traveling into the past.
As Kat and Evan make their way through nineteenth-century Vienna, the Dark One stalks them, and Kat must decide what she’s willing to sacrifice to save a ghost.

~AUTHOR INTERVIEW with K.C. Tansley~

1) What gave you the inspiration for the storyline?

Since this is a series, Book 1 really laid the groundwork for Book 2. In Book 1, Kat reunited the Radcliffes with their family heirloom, so the next step was to reunite the Kingsleys with their heirloom. The heirlooms are amulets that make each family powerful, so I needed the heirlooms to be lost at different times, causing each family to slowly become weakened. I decided on the early 1800s for the Kingsley dagger to disappear. The time period came into focus as I researched Vienna more.

Why Vienna? Well, I went to Austria in 2009 for a week and fell in love with the art, culture, history, and cuisine. In Book 1, Kat and Evan time-travel to 1886 Connecticut. This time, I wanted them to go somewhere more historic that they could really geek out over. Vienna during the Austro-Hungarian Empire was it. Of course, I had to do research on what Vienna in 1831 would be like. I had a lot of fun discovering that!

2) Are there any hidden themes in the book that you hope readers will discover?

The book explores the concept of family—those you are born with and those you choose. For Kat, she never knew her father’s side of the family. It left a hole in her heart and an uncertainty about who she is. She’s got amazing friends and they help fill that void. But she still yearns for the part of her family that rejected her. I think it’s a very basic need—to know where you come from and to feel a part of it.

3) Are any of the characters based on real people you know?

I definitely drew from my experiences in college. Georgetown University has a diverse student body, and I wanted to have characters that reflected the world I lived in. So my inspiration for the characters started with my own background and my friends’ backgrounds. Kat’s the descendant of Russian immigrants on her mom’s side, just like I am. My best friend in college is from Texas with Mexican and Native American roots and she is a jumping off point for Morgan. Evan was inspired by a friend who is of Vietnamese and Irish descent. Seth is Irish and Argentine and was inspired by a few friends.

On the surface, Kat and I look similar—blonde hair, green eyes, wear glasses, tall, and curvy. It felt easier to write someone who was more like me for my first attempt at fiction. She’s very smart and school focused, which I was at her age too.

4) Who has influenced you most as a writer?

I was reading Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series during editorial revisions and was influenced by the amount of visuals and the smoothness of her storytelling. I saw each book unfold in my mind as I read it and I strove to deliver that same experience to my readers. Richelle Mead’s pacing from the Vampire Academy series also impacted my writing.

Reading the Amanda Quick historic romances during the 1990s influenced my desire to write family sagas with historic estates and family heirlooms.

As a kid, I loved Edgar Allen Poe stories, which probably contributes to the creepy, supernatural stuff in my stories. And Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights gave me a taste for the haunting love story that plays out between the Langleys and the Kingsleys over the centuries.

5) If you could have any three literary characters over to your place for game night, who would you invite, what would you play, what would you serve, and why?

I’d invite some fun sidekicks from books because it’s game night and we aren’t going into battle, so MJ from K.R. Conway’s Undertow series, Eve from Rachel Caine’s Morganville Vampire series, and Magnus from Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series. We’d play Clue because that is my favorite game.  It’s game night, so I’d have snacks for picking at while we played like chips and guac and salsa. Cheetos. Maybe cheese and pepperoni too. If it’s a marathon of games, we’d order some authentic Chinese food too. Magnus would be able to conjure it straight from Shanghai.

Author Bio:
K.C. Tansley lives with her warrior lapdog, Emerson, and two quirky golden retrievers on a hill somewhere in Connecticut. She tends to believe in the unbelievables—spells, ghosts, time travel—and writes about them.
Never one to say no to a road trip, she’s climbed the Great Wall twice, hopped on the Sound of Music tour in Salzburg, and danced the night away in the dunes of Cape Hatteras. She loves the ocean and hates the sun, which makes for interesting beach days. The Girl Who Ignored Ghosts is her award-winning and bestselling first novel in The Unbelievables series.
As Kourtney Heintz, she also writes award winning cross-genre fiction for adults.

EXCERPT:
As she stepped up to the last rack of shelves, she realized she hadn’t quite reached the end of the room. Tucked beyond the last shelf was another door—solid steel with no visible handle or lock. A web of magic crisscrossed the metal and complex runes filled four overlapping circles that shifted in a spiraling pattern.
She raised her fingers, keeping a safe several inches between her skin and the steel, and traced a glowing circle. That. She’d never seen anything quite like that before, but she knew it would react to touch. How it would react was another matter.
Intrigued, she leaned in closer, peering intently at the weaving’s underlayers as she tried to work out what it did.
“Don’t touch that.”
Lyre’s voice shattered the silence right behind her. A squeak of fright escaped her as she jerked backward from the door. But, with her sudden movement, her hand went the wrong way. And her fingers, already so close to the door, slapped against the metal.
She cringed in terror, fully expecting the door to explode or her bones to melt or her skull to burst open. Nothing happened—until she tried to pull her hand away.
It was stuck.
She yanked on her hand, but it was fused to the metal as though her skin had been superglued in place.
“I told you not to touch it.”
She shot a glare at Lyre, standing two paces away. “I wouldn’t have touched it if you hadn’t startled me!”
He tucked his binder under his arm and shoved his hands in his pockets. “Why would you touch anything in here without permission?”
“I told you—” She bit off the words. “Unkey the spell.”
“Hmm.” He rocked back on his heels and a downright evil little smirk curved his lips. “Not sure I know how.”
“What?”
“That lovely bit of work predates me. It’s pretty complicated. Since you fancy yourself a spell expert, if you look here, you’ll see—”
He started to point, and she had no idea why, but she flinched back as though he might hit her. Her elbow bumped the door—and got stuck too.
Lyre’s hand paused. “Now look what you did.”
“I didn’t—you—get me off this!”
“As I was saying, you can see here that the weaving amalgamates anything that touches it, so it’s embedded into your skin now—”
“Get me off this door!” She jerked helplessly, her immobilized wrist and elbow twisting awkwardly.
“Well, I could pull you off, but you might lose some skin. Though, since the weaving is spreading into your flesh the longer you stand there, you might leave more than skin behind.”
Her heart kicked up to a full gallop from her growing terror. He, however, seemed perfectly calm. Amused, in fact. Humor danced in his amber eyes, softening the color to something closer to buttery gold.
He was laughing at her.
“Oh.” His eyebrows rose. “That’s quite the scowl.”
She gritted her teeth. “Get. Me. Off.”
Those irresistible lips curved up and her stomach dropped to her feet. The air heated. Why was she suddenly kind of dizzy? Shadows slid through his eyes, dimming the amber to shimmering bronze.
“Get you off?” he repeated, and his tones were all purring honey, warm and deep and sensual. “With pleasure.”
A hot blush swooped through her cheeks as she realized what she’d said. “I—I didn’t mean—I was—”
In a panic, she lurched away from him—right into the spelled door.

Author Bio:

Annette Marie is the author of the Amazon best-selling Steel & Stone series, which includes Goodreads Choice Award nominee Yield the Night, and fantasy trilogy Red Winter. Her first love is fantasy, but fast- paced urban fantasy and tantalizing forbidden romances are her guilty pleasures. She lives in the frozen winter wasteland of Alberta, Canada (okay, it's not quite that bad) with her comparatively sensible husband and their furry minion of darkness—sorry, cat—Caesar. When not writing, she can be found elbow-deep in one art project or another while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.
