Rise as the Fall Unfolds

The final five angels have been located and averting the apocalypse means somehow recreating the birth of Christ.
Morgan never expected total annihilation would come down to the actions of five misfit angels. But as each one’s hidden angelic power unfolds, so does the sinister truth… the entire Jesus storyline has been wiped from the collective consciousness, leaving a tear in the fabric of reality.
The final five need to figure out how their gifts are meant to fit together in order to set things right. However, coming to terms with the responsibility resting on their shoulders doesn’t come easy. To make matters worse, the demons have found them and unless they get on the same page quickly, the darkness will consume them all. But how can they make things right when the thing that’s missing happened more than 2000 years ago?
One thing’s for sure. If they fail, existence ceases.
If you love books like Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s American Gods or Good Omens, Joe Hill’s Nos4A2, or Stephen King’s (Richard Bachman) Blaze, then you’ll love Awakening!
~AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Carissa Andrews~
1)
What gave you the inspiration for the storyline?
It’s kind of
interesting… the storyline for Awakening is actually two separate ideas
that got merged together. Shortly after the 2016 election, I was thinking a lot
about “sleeper” angels. What would they look like, why would they be called? I
started writing this story in a response to this thought process, but I found I
didn’t have the whole picture. Then, this time last year, my writer’s group had
a Christmas writing prompt to view the birth of Jesus from a different
perspective. (There were secular prompts, too, but this one jumped off the page
at me.) Interestingly, when I was in my 20’s (and well before I started writing
books), I wondered about what time travel would look like to the world view of
ancient people. What sorts of things could be altered or created. When
combined, the rest of Awakening unfolded and here we are.
2) Are there any hidden (or not so hidden) themes in the book that you hope readers will discover?
For sure. I tend to
write in themes into all of my novels in the hopes that they make people think
and look at the world a little differently. For this one, one of them (not all,
by any means), is this idea that it’s never too late to be who and what we’re
meant to become.
3) Are any of the characters based on real people you know?
Funnily enough, I
was just laughing with my Miscreant Readers on Facebook about the fact that Bea
(the old woman) reminds me of my great-grandma Lamira. There was an old blog
post from 2011 where I expressed being somewhat traumatized by her lack of
modesty, but as an adult, find the whole thing completely funny. I didn’t even
realize I was writing Bea like grandma Lamira, so I had to laugh about how she
came out because I find her absolutely hilarious.
4) Who has influenced you most as a writer?
Hands down, Joss
Whedon. While I know he’s a TV and movie writer, his style of storytelling has
been such a force in my life. To this day, I love his ironic and sardonic humor
and love turning things on their heads – just because I can. ;)
5) If you could have any three literary characters over to your place for game night, who would you invite, what would you play, what would you serve, and why?
Nate Temple (Shayne Silvers), Diana Hawthorne (my book
Oracle), and Bea (my book Awakening). The reason being, Nate Temple is HILARIOUS,
and I would love to see him snark it up with Diana. I think they would have
some funny as hell conversations. Adding Bea to the mix would be simply for my
own pleasure of having her bluntness in the room, combined with her extreme
intellect. It would be amazing. I’d probably have them play Cards Against
Humanity – and serve up all the cocktail weenies, munchies, and drinks they can
handle. Then sit back and watch the hilarity ensue.
6) Do you feel that you can ever have too many books?
As someone who has worked in bookstores, I can honestly say – HELL NO. LOL! (Kid you not, don’t work in a bookstore if you love books. It’s hazardous to your budget.) There is ALWAYS a new story or book you need in your life. If it’s the choice between buying food and buying books, I always go for the books. HA!
