Alien scientist David has dealt with disappointment his entire life, but failing to breathe life into the planet Mars is his greatest regret. Out of options and in need of a new home for their people, the alien Caretakers rekindle their plan to inhabit Earth. First they will have to eliminate the
human race, including Jess, the only human David holds dear.

Humanity has one final chance at survival. David needs to emulate Earth’s precipitation on Mars. But the catalyst to make it rain lies in the fathomless depths of Earth’s ocean.

The clock is ticking down to humanity’s last hours as Jess and David face a world more alien than either of them can imagine. The sea hides secrets, but some secrets don’t want to be found.

Excerpt:

We rattled, cascading and spinning. My sight blurred. My breakfast threatened a reappearance. I closed my eyes and prayed David and Edgar could bring us under control. The tiles rumbled beneath my cheek before we collided to a stop.

My body left the floor before slamming back down once again.

Oww.

I blinked until I could focus. David lay across the side of his seat, his head dangling near the floor. “David!” I dragged myself from the unforgiving tiles and sat him back in his chair. His head lolled back, his mouth slightly open. “Oh, God. David, please wake up!”

Pressing my fingers against the side of his neck and his wrists, I sought a pulse. I couldn’t find one, but relief flooded me as his chest rose and fell in a shallow breath. I glanced over each shoulder, and toward the back of the ship, looking for what, I didn’t know.

Why hadn’t the seats come to life and protected us?

I grabbed the edge of David’s chair, pulling him from the seat and into my arms. “David?” I kissed him and ran my fingers along the side of his face. “David, please … ”

I would have felt less empty if part of my chest had broken off and floated away into the abyss. I didn’t care that we’d crash-landed again. I didn’t care that the marine floor was probably more alien than the green planet we’d been marooned on. I didn’t care that the pressure of an entire ocean weighed down on us. And I didn’t care that he left me alone for two years.

He was here. Now. And hurt. I fisted my hands and pushed with my mind. If he needed strength, maybe I could send it to him.

His lashes fluttered. His eyes opened, but didn’t seem to focus. “Jess?”

I gulped back a sob. “Yeah. I’m here.”

He tried to sit up, but frowned and relaxed back into my arms. “Are we okay?”

“I don’t know.”

About Jennifer:

Jennifer M. Eaton hails from the eastern shore of the North American Continent on planet Earth. Yes, regrettably, she is human, but please don’t hold that against her. While not traipsing through the galaxy looking for specimens for her space moth collection, she lives with her wonderfully supportive husband and three energetic offspring. (And a poodle who runs the spaceport when she’s not around.)
During infrequent excursions to her home planet of Earth, Jennifer enjoys long hikes in the woods, bicycling, swimming, snorkeling, and snuggling up by the fire with a great book; but great adventures are always a short shuttle ride away.

Who knows where we’ll end up next?

~AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Jennifer Eaton~

1) What gave you the inspiration for the storyline?

Being that EMBERS IN THE SEA is book three in a series, the inspiration was the first two books, and the fans. I never intended this to be a three book series, but all of the sudden I had people posting pictures of the book all over Instagram and Facebook, and reading the book with friends and in book clubs. Believe me, knowing you guys are all out there, waiting for more, is a HUGE inspiration to keep writing. Alien kisses for everybody!

2) Are there any hidden themes in the book that you hope readers will discover?

In general, Fire in the Woods is a fun story about running for your life while stuff blows up… but there are a few deeper themes, like friendship, honor, tolerance, racial equality, and striving to do what’s right. This is a story about a regular girl and a gifted, but conflicted boy taking on incredible odds to do what they think is right.

3) Are any of the characters based on real people you know?

No. I’ve never really done that. I write for fun, and part of fun is escaping reality. I like to write people of my own invention, rather than spending my “me” time with people I hang with every day. (That probably makes no sense whatsoever, but, yeah, there it is). J

4) Who has influenced you most as a writer?

My favorite authors are Jennifer L. Armentrout, (YA Spec romance) Jocelyn Adams,(YA/NA Spec Romance) Jess Acardo (Contemporary YA thriller romance) and Suzane Brockman (Adult Navy Seal stories).

I think all of them have had somewhat of an impact on my writing. Armentrout has a way of drawing you into a story and not letting go. Adams writes with a unique voice that really connects you to a character. Acardo writes with fantastic pressure and pacing. Brockman is a master of creating fantastic ensemble casts of characters where you love the secondary characters as much as the main characters. I try to emulate some of what they do when I write. Finding a balance of these elements is a tricky process.

5) If you could have any three literary characters over to your place for game night, who would you invite, what would you play, what would you serve, and why?

Oooo, what an interesting question!

Hmmm. Let’s start with Mark Twain, who isn’t really a character, but he’s literary, and quite a character. He’s be good for a few laughs.

Then let’s throw in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and Cleaena from Throne of Glass to throw in a little chic-power. (And I want someone to defend everyone in case Dracula gets hungry.)

How’s that for an eclectic crew!?

I’d serve nothing but dessert, because I really want to keep Dracula’s sweet-tooth at bay, and then we’d all play Twister. Not sure why we’d play Twister, but it sounds like fun!

Moving slowly, as if trying not to frighten off a wild bird, he took her hand. He
stepped closer, enfolding her hand inside both of his.
“Come.”
He led her to an adjoining room and closed the door.
Stillness enfolded them. Richard brought one of Elizabeth’s hands into his chest and
smiled down at her with tenderness shining in his eyes. With slow, deliberate movements, he tugged at each fingertip to loosen her evening glove and slid it off her arm. He lowered his head and kissed the back of her hand. His breath, warm and moist, caressed her skin. And his lips. Oh, his lips were so soft. So gentle. The last of her fears scattered as he kissed first her hand, then each finger. He turned over her hand and pressed his lips to her fingers, her palm, her wrist. Pleasure glided along her skin in unexpected sensuality. Her heart thumped and heat built inside. She inhaled his masculine scent and stepped closer. He kissed her palm again before wrapping his fingers around it. Warmth shone in his eyes as he raised his other hand to her face. He traced the curve of her jaw and brushed the back of his fingers across her cheek, up and down.
“Soft. Beautiful.” Tenderness was joined by intensity. “I will never give you cause to
fear me, sweet Elizabeth. I count myself fortunate that we shall wed on the morrow. Any man would be proud to have you as his bride.”
She’d only ever dreamed of a man saying such lovely words to her and touching her
with such gentleness. Light filled the dark places inside, bringing hope and belonging. Tears rose up and spilled down her cheeks.
He carefully wiped the moisture away with the pad of his thumb, tracing her cheek
again. “I hope those aren’t tears of sadness.”
She let out a half sob, half laugh. “No, indeed. Your words mean much to me, my
lor…Richard.”
He kissed her hand again. “Ah. A good sign. You give me hope. I’d like to enjoy
the pleasure of your company more, but I suppose, sadly, we ought to return to our guests now.”
Speechless at the warmth tumbling over her, she nodded.
Richard. A knight in a gentleman’s clothing.

MIDDLE GRADE MONDAY book suggestions: "Poppy Mayberry, The Monday (Nova Kids, #1)" & "Operation Tenley (The Fair City Files, #1)"

What if your teacher could read your mind just because she was born on a Thursday? Or the kid next to you in class could turn back the clock just because he was a 'Wednesday''? In the quirky town of Nova, all of this is normal, but one thing is not -- Poppy Mayberry. As an almost-eleven-year-old Monday, she should be able to pass notes in class or brush her dog, Pickle, without lifting a finger. But her Monday telekinesis still has some kinks, and that plate of spaghetti she's passing may just end up on someone's head. And if that's not hard enough, practically perfect Ellie Preston is out to get her, and Principal Wible wants to send her to remedial summer school to work on her powers! It's enough to make a girl want to disappear... if only she were a Friday.

---

Meet Tenley Tylwyth, an Elemental Teen born with the power to produce weather. Cool? Not really. Elementals who can create weather make Mother Nature angry. It’s time she got rid of them. Only one thing is standing in her way — Fair Ones. These ancestors of fairies keep kids like Tenley safe, but when rookie Fair One, Pennie, fails to do so, she’s forced to travel to Earth — a place where no Fair One wants to go. Now, Pennie has forty-eight hours to convince Tenley to give up her power. It won’t be so easy. Tenley’s got a way with wind. And after falling deep into Mother Nature’s gardens, where trees grow upside down and insects attack on command, a little wind might be just what Tenley needs to survive. Even if it kills her.

Playing it by ear usually just meant that we’d spontaneously find a new
store to check out or eat at a favorite place, people-watching all the way.
Natalie got two guys’ phone numbers before we even boarded the T. I knew she
wouldn’t ever call them because she liked keeping tally more than actually
dating.

“Your turn next,” Laurie announced after getting one herself.

“I don’t need phone numbers. I’ve got Nick.”

“And we’re very happy for you,” Natalie said impatiently, “but flirting
muscles can atrophy.”

“Two-timing isn’t my style,” I retorted.

“This isn’t even that,” Natalie insisted. “No physical contact
necessary.”

“Or encouraged,” Laurie added helpfully. “That’s the lazy girl’s way to
a man’s heart.”
“Whoa.” I held up a hand. “Now you’re just fighting dirty.”

“You’re stalling,” she shot back. “Get moving.”

Nick would probably laugh at the guys I chose, but it would be fun to
give it a shot and it would shut them both up.

“Nick won’t find out,” Natalie reconsidered. “It’s just a number, not a
fling.”

“I’m not the type to have flings,” I pointed out.

“You’re not over the hill yet, and neither is green sweatshirt at six
o’clock,” Laurie answered. “Go for it.”
Green sweatshirt guy had dark hair and a cute enough backside for me to
look forward to a front view.

“Go, fight, win,” Natalie added before shoving me in his direction.

He wasn’t facing my way, so he didn’t see me stumble like a nervous
freshman. By the time I was ready to approach, I’d found my footing and was now
a casual passerby. He got bonus points for not having earphones plugged in and
reading a book. Since I wasn’t Aislin, I couldn’t use Twain as an icebreaker.
That narrowed my range of pickup lines, but they were all good ones.

He turned to check the route of an incoming train and looked
bewilderingly like I’d just made his weekend. “Hey,” he said. “I thought you
were booked today.”

I suddenly forgot every clever thing I had planned to say. “I’m sorry,”
I blurted out. “Did I reject you before?”

“Not really,” he said with a laugh. “You do remember our last
conversation, right?”

“Honestly, no,” I said. I might have seen him before, but nothing about
him was familiar. “Your name starts with a D?”

“N,” he corrected, his smile going a little wooden. “Well, this is
humiliating.”

That went for the both of us. He looked a little like one of our
football players, but . . .

And then my brain caught up.  “N?” I asked quickly. “As in
Nathaniel?”

“I knew we’d get there eventually,” he said, looking slightly less
crestfallen. “Does that mean you’re not going to dinner with me?”

“Nate from Michigan, the future physical therapist . . .” It was time to
let an explanation fix things. “My sister has told me so much about you.”

Color flooded back into his face and I couldn’t tell if he was blushing
or just relieved that he had made a lasting impression. “Your sister,” he
echoed.

I dug into my purse and whipped out my real license. I held it up for
comparison so he could see I wasn’t bluffing, and then handed it over for
closer inspection.

“I’m Maeve,” I explained, “and you’re Aislin’s favorite person on
campus.”

His red face was now definitely caused by a blush. “Aislin didn’t
mention her sister was a dead ringer,” he admitted.

“I promise I’m not crazy. We just haven’t been introduced.”

He passed the license back, turning the handoff into a handshake. “I’m
Nate,” he said. “Some crazy is good.”

I wondered if he’d feel the same if he ran into my sister before she’d
washed leaves and twigs from her hair.
“I’m glad you know that,” I said, letting go of his perfectly nice hand.
“It’s nice to meet you.”
“You too,” he commented. “So, what were you actually doing over here?”

“Trying to get your number,” I admitted with genuine embarrassment.
