Cas lives in the lovely county of Hampshire, southern UK, where she was born. On leaving school she trained for two years before qualifying as horse-riding instructor. During this time she also learned to carriage-drive. She spent thirteen years in the British Civil Service before moving to Rome, Italy, where she and her husband, Dave, lived for three years. AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1) What gave you the inspiration for the storyline?

The idea for the original storyline of the first book in my Artesans series, King’s Envoy, came from a 1970s kid’s TV program. It was called “Tarot, Ace of Wands” and it concerned a conjuror who used his magic talents to solve crime. It got me wondering – what if you were someone who was born with a unique special talent that you had no idea how to use. There’s no one to teach you, so how do you learn to control this power? What mistakes might you make, what disasters might happen, and what trouble might you get into as you struggle to make sense of the powers you were born with? My musings led me to imagine a little scene, and when I wrote it out one day, I discovered I had written one of the major scenes in what later became the first novel in my Artesans triple-trilogy fantasy series. (In case you’re wondering, it’s the scene where Taran first meets Major Sullyan.)

  

2) Are there any hidden themes in the book that you hope readers will discover?

The main theme throughout the saga is one of personal development. Due to his difficult start in life and his many failures as he struggles to control his metaforce,Taran has no confidence in himself. During the saga, and because of his relationship with Sullyan, he slowly comes to believe in himself and finds his inner courage. A secondary theme is the corrupting influence of power on those less able to handle it.

3) Are any of the characters based on real people you know?

I would love to say that yes, Sullyan is based on myself, but that would not be true. Rather, Sullyan is based on the person I would most like to be, but am not! However, the character of the Albian High King, Elias Rovannon, is based on English actor Sean Bean’s portrayal of the Bernard Cornwell character, Richard Sharpe. I hope that doesn’t sound too confusing!

4) Who has influenced you most as a writer?

There are many literary influences in my writing life. Anne McCaffrey, Tolkein, Peter Morwood, C J Cherryh, Stephen Donaldson, Terry Brooks, Roger Zelazny, Charles de Lint, Lord Dunsany, Robert Holdstock and Marion Zimmer Bradley to name only a few. I could go on, but I won’t!

5) If you could have any three literary characters over to your place for game night, who would you invite, what would you play, what would you serve, and why?

Gosh – tricky question!  I’m not much into games, so I think it would just have to be a gathering to talk about my favorite books, worlds and characters. One would have to be someone like Aragorn from Lord of the Rings, because he’s great at poetry and singing, and he’s also an awesome sword-fighter. Richard Sharpe from the Bernard Cornwell Sharpe series would be another because he’s extremely handsome and I think he’d get on well with Aragorn. (Sorry to harp on about Sharpe but he is so dishy!!) And the last would have to be Manda Scott’s Boudica, because she’s a fantastic kick-ass female who would help me balance all that testosterone. We’d have to eat barbequed food because none of those characters are noted for their fine table manners! But I think they’d all appreciate a really good bottle of wine or six.
