BOOK BLITZ for "First Full Moon" by Michelle Alstead

First Full Moon
by Michelle Alstead
Publication date: August 28th, 2018
Genres: Fantasy, Paranormal, Young Adult
More secrets. More lies. I’m going to die.
She wanted a car for her sixteenth birthday, not magical powers… Candy McGregor is a teenager living in Sequim Falls, a small East Coast town, where the McGregors own just about everything. While her grandmother grooms her to run the family business — a pharmaceutical empire — Candy dreams of a life where she’s known as more than just a last name. When the monthly family dinner turns into a horror show, Candy discovers the McGregors aren’t so much blessed as they are cursed. At midnight on her sixteenth birthday, Candy inherits both the ability to do magic and the destiny to become a wolf on the next full moon. There is hope of a life that doesn’t require being chained up once a month. If Candy can undo the original spell that created the curse, she can rid the world of werewolves and remain a witch. But there’s one really big problem. Not everyone hates being a wolf. With the next full moon looming, Candy must take on forces that will do anything to stop her. Will she break the curse or surrender to life as a monster?
EXCERPT:
The windows are shut and the blinds drawn. A space heater warms my bedroom to a balmy eighty degrees. As I stand in the middle of the room, a cold draft blows past me, raising the hair on my arms and neck.
Someone is watching me.
Will it be my time soon? Will I be the next one taken?
“That creepy frown on your face is going to cause premature wrinkles,” Larkin says.
My cousin lies across my bed, her black combat boots dangling off the edge as she scrolls through her phone without pausing long enough to read anything. She chews gum and blows a bubble that pops, covering her mouth. Larkin doesn’t seem to mind that strands of her long, raven-black hair brush the gum she pries from her face.
“I’m fifteen and too young for wrinkles,” I reply, moving to the window and opening the blinds. From the third floor, I can see everything and everyone in front of the house. The driveway and yard are empty. Not a soul to be seen anywhere.
“You turn sixteen in like five hours.” Larkin’s only a little bitter I’m the oldest grandchild.
Even though I can’t see anyone, there’s someone watching me. I feel it.

BOOK TOUR for " Nanna and the 'c' " by Doris Schneider

Nana and the “c” is a book for all ages and all cultures as it is about family and the ability to support a loved one through the challenges of cancer. It is told from a seven-year-old’s perspective as she gathers the courage to face her grandmother’s illness and learns that her irritating younger sister is perhaps smarter than she seems. Together they also learn how to conquer their biggest fear and replace worry with wonder.

The story is uplifting and often humorous while symbolizing hope. It will make readers of all ages laugh, cry, and remember their own childhood and the relationships and events that influenced who they have become. The goal of this story is to help children through health crises in their family. The illustrator, editor and designer donated their time to help with the project in order to make possible the donation of copies of the book to waiting rooms of cancer clinics.

Thank you so much for your generosity. We’re donating books to hospitals and children’s centers. Anywhere people might benefit from an uplifting story dealing with cancer.
~ Universal Amazon Link ~

****(4) out of 5 Stars!

A story inspired by real events in the life of the author, written from the perspective of her 7-year-old granddaughter.  The primary illustrations are beautiful renderings based on actual photographs that the author took with her family.

A genuine and unique way to address such a serious issue with children, even fairly young ones.  The book describes the basics of cancer and treatment options, without going into too much overwhelming detail.  It acknowledges the scariness of a cancer diagnosis, without giving in to despair over it.  It does skirt around the fact that some people do die from cancer, including the other grandma of cousins to the main characters.  But it emphasizes there are treatment options and much that can be done when cancer is caught early.  Even though there are often adverse side effects - like hair loss - that can be just as scary for kids as everything else.

I believe this would be a great introduction to children in general about cancer, and an especially good resource for those facing it with a loved one.  The book's ultimate message is mostly we should spend our time on wonder and not worry.

Doris Schneider is an artist, scene designer, writer, and educator. She taught at William Carey University and was a tenured professor of theatre at North Carolina Central University. She published two novels: Borrowed Things and By Way of Water

After her own bout with breast cancer, she wrote this story based on a real event with her granddaughters. While the illustrator, Wenhai Ma, was teaching at Duke University, the two became long term friends—culminating in their collaboration on Nana and the “c”.

Meet the Illustrator:

Wenhai Ma - American-Chinese scene designer, illustrator and educator. He was granted tenured professorship at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He graduated from the Central Academy of Drama, China and Carnegie Mellon University, USA. He has taught at Duke University, University of Nebraska Lincoln, Purdue University and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Central Academy of Drama, China and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore. From New York Times bestselling author Katy Regnery comes a dark and twisted retelling of the beloved fairytale, Cinderella!

With the help of my godfather, Gus, I have escaped from Mosier’s clutches, but his twin sons and henchmen have been tasked with hunting me down. And they will stop at nothing to return my virgin body to their father …dead or alive.

~AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Katy Regnery~

  • What gave you the inspiration for the storyline?
To be really honest, I have never loved the story of Cinderella… but at some point, I decided that if I’m going to write her, I’m really going to torture her! LOL!
Okay. No, seriously. Here’s what I did…
Basically, I looked at the characters and bones of the story.
Characters: dead mother, dead father, orphaned girl, stepmother, stepsisters, fairy godmother, prince charming.
Bones: Girl loses parents. Girl lives with malicious stepparent and stepsiblings. Girl is made to work like a slave. Girl loses hope. Girl meets prince who gives her hope. Girl almost loses prince. Prince finds girl. Girl and Prince live happily ever after.
Once I had the characters and bones outlined, I could change things up! How about a stepfather instead of a stepmother? How about making the sort of “work” the girl has to do really amoral? How about a fairy godfather instead of a fairy godmother? How about our Prince has some issues of his own?
From there? Honestly, it was cake. And what a blast I had writing it!

  • Are there any hidden themes in the book that you hope readers will discover?
Hmm. Themes. Well, I guess “second chances” and “redemption” always play important roles in my books, but they’re not exactly hidden. A more sweeping theme might be the complexity of the mother-daughter relationship, and how it’s never too late to mend it.

  • Are any of the characters based on real people you know?
Not especially and not on purpose! But I suppose all of my characters are, in some way, composites of real people who have impacted my life or stirred my imagination. I mean, I don’t know any mob bosses, but I’ve seen plenty of movies that gave me a place to start when writing Mosier. And I don’t know any glassblowers personally, but I watched a ton of videos about glassblowing at the Simon Pearce factory in Vermont. So, no, none of the characters are based on friends and family, but a combination of research and experience blended to create them.

  • If you could have any three literary characters over to your place for game night, who would you invite, and why?
Great question! Oh, Lord, there are too many…so let’s see…it’s me and these three at the table, right? I think…Elizabeth Bennett (Pride & Prejudice), maybe. I love her so completely and she’s just one of the sassiest, most interesting heroines ever. And maybe Bathsheba Everdene (Far from the Madding Crowd) because she was so strong. She wouldn’t marry for comfort or convenience. Then she did marry for sex (!!) And only later she married for love. She learned a lot about the different seasons of love. And lastly…I think Sara Fielding (Dreaming of You) because she’s another great romantic heroine who was underestimated by the men around her! What a great dinner that would be!

  • Do you feel that you can ever have too many books?
Of course not! Have you ever tried cleaning out a book shelf? I end up sitting on the floor for hours, reading my favorite passages, and chuckling over clever writing. And in the end? I feel a great need to go out and buy a few more. 😊

Excerpt:

I remembered my mission and left Haley, speeding up my pace as I searched for the tallest head in the bar. Brax wasn’t hard to find—he towered over ninety percent of the other patrons filling the place.
I spotted him over near the stage, his hands above his head leaning against the wall. As I got closer, I could see he was talking to a woman, who was much shorter than he. She had her back against the wall and her eyes were all starry as they peered up at him. Typical. I hadn’t even been there an hour and I had to put up with that. Not that it bothered me at all. Nope, not one single bit. Brax was a grown man who could do whatever he wanted. Who was I kidding? I was so jealous it hurt. God, why couldn’t he look at me like that?
Setting my irritation and jealousy aside, I pushed my way through the crowd and planted myself right in the middle of their partnering; facing the woman, I smiled.
“Sorry, I only need one moment of my neighbor’s time. Just one little second,” I said and raised my pointer finger to face height so she understood over the music.
I didn’t wait for her reply but immediately turned and stared up into the face of a God—crap, I mean Brax. I didn’t have time for lusty thoughts about him right now.
Brax opened his mouth to speak, but I covered it with my palm.
“No time for your cocky words, my friend. Did you do what I asked? Just nod, that’s all I need from you tonight. Save your words for what’s-her-face behind me.”
I could feel Brax laugh, his mouth moving behind my hand as he nodded up and down.
“Great, where is he?” I continued.
Brax just raised an eyebrow as I waited for his reply. I realized why he wasn’t answering and quickly removed my palm from his mouth.
“You look adorable tonight, Jess.”
Those velvety words streamed from his mouth, well, actually, were hollered, but my mind wanted to imagine it another way. Stupid man! He had no idea what he did to me. It took a lot of effort to act as if his presence didn’t affect me. Every. Damn. Day.
I hit him in the stomach. I wasn’t falling for his smoothness this time. Other girls would, but I’ve been living next to him for years and have heard it all before.
“Knock it off. Now hurry up and tell me where Goatee Guy is,” I demanded, entirely over the conversation already.
Brax peered around me before leaning over my shoulder to whisper something in the woman’s ear behind me. I knew then what being the meat in a sandwich felt like and it was pretty darn uncomfortable as my backside pushed into her front. Nevertheless, she didn’t seem to care as she giggled girlishly into my ear.
Brax stood up straight once more and flung an arm around my shoulder, pulling me away from the side of the club and making way for us through the crowd. As we reached the bar, I pushed his arm off and away and took a seat on a vacant stool. His two arms placed themselves on either side of my body, caging me in as I waited for one of the bartenders to take my order.
“First off, his name is not Goatee Guy. He’s my brother and his name is Thomas. But I’ll let him know what you call him. And yes, Thomas is here,” Brax whispered in my ear. If that bar wasn’t holding me up, the floor and I would have been quite acquainted.
“So, where is he then?” I managed to groan out. I hoped I sounded annoyed and not super flustered, which is what I was feeling with his uber-close proximity.
“I don’t know. I’m not his keeper, but he’s here somewhere,” Brax snorted. “Why is it so important to get him here anyway? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love hanging with my baby bro, but you were adamant he had to come tonight, which makes me think you’re up to something,” Brax spoke into my ear again.
I couldn’t take it. Screw the drink, I needed fresh air A.S.A.P. Ducking under his arm, I pushed him out of the way and made a beeline for the beer garden. But as I pushed open the glass door, I felt the impact and heard, “Argh!!!” Oh God, I’d pushed the door straight into some poor guy’s nose!
I let go of the door and brought my hands up to cover my face, too scared to look. Oh God, oh God, oh God. I felt the chilly gust of air as the door was flung open again. Taking a peek out through the crack between my fingers, I saw none other than Goatee, I mean Thomas, holding a hand over his bleeding nose.
“Shit! Thomas! Oh my God, I’m so sorry!” I cried.
Grabbing him by the shirtsleeve, I took the lead and began pulling him as fast as I could through the crowd and towards the back offices where I knew Damon kept his first-aid kit. Being accident prone, I had to know exactly where he kept the medical supplies. Usually, I was fine—it was other people that really needed to steer clear of me completely or give me a tremendously wide-berth.
As we walked along the corridor, the perfect opportunity presented itself—May was just coming out of the women’s bathroom. That’s when I decided to push Thomas in front of her.
“May, you have to help him! I’m freaking out about all the blood.”
“Oh, jeepers. What happened?” May asked urgently, trying cautiously to peer behind Thomas’ hands to inspect the damage.
“I happened. I pushed a door into his face, which, mind you, I’m going to have to talk to Damon about the dangers…”
“Yes, you do that, Jess,” May cut my rambling. She grabbed Thomas and led him to the end of the corridor and through the door into the office.
I watched them disappear and couldn’t help but smile. Plan “Help May Find Love” was officially in play! Damn, this whole matchmaker thing was working like a charm. Maybe I had found my new calling—Sparkles the Matchmaker fairy.
The sad thing was I had no idea exactly what was about to be set in motion.

Excerpt:

No way was she misinterpreting the need reflecting back at her.
Say it, she silently urged. Too proud to beg out loud. Do something.
“What do you want, Finn?” she repeated.
Please.
He tipped his head down, though his gaze remained on her, but the light in those blue depths shifted, turning from banked need, held ruthlessly in check, to a possessiveness that drew her body into aching awareness.
He pulled lightly on her wrist, drawing her across what had been an impassable chasm of space, until she was flush against his hard body. His other hand came under the fall of her hair to rest against her neck.
She didn’t look away, not even as he lowered his head, his movement agonizingly slow. His mouth only a whisper from hers, he stopped.
“You,” he said. “I want you.”
Finally. She had no idea if she closed the distanced between their lips or if he did. She only knew that she was getting exactly what she wanted.
Sensation forced her eyes closed as the heat of him seeped into her skin, her body flushing with it, swamping her senses. Their tongues tangled, his mouth hard and urgent against hers, like he couldn’t get enough, like he needed to possess her. The speed of her body’s reaction was so fast, so immediate, that she went dizzy with the need, like looking over the edge of a terrifying drop.
She was too out of her element, too out of control, but she didn’t want to stop. She wanted more.
He released her wrist, wrapping his arm around her waist, her softness yielding to his hard body as he held her closer. At the same time, he loosened his grip on her neck, brushing over the sensitive skin at her nape with his fingers.
Shards of electricity zapped from that simple touch directly to her core, which throbbed in response. At the same time, warmth from that touch spread through her on a wave of a feeling akin to total acceptance. Like this was where she was supposed to be. A low moan dragged from her mouth as he lifted her, just enough that it put him in complete control. He slipped a thigh between her legs, then pressed her down.
Holy hell.
Delaney leaned into him, her body softening into his, attuned to what his wicked hands and lips were doing to her even as her heart beat fast as hummingbird’s wings just to be in his arms. She arched into him, moving against him with a moan.
His hand slid under her shirt and he brushed against the sensitive flesh at her waist, his skin warm against hers. Which only made her want more skin.
With eager hands, she tugged at his black t-shirt, breaking their kisses only long enough to pull it over his head. Then she allowed her hands to roam, to feel the rigid strength in his body, loving the heat of him, the bourbon and Coke smell of him.
A shudder shook his body. “I want you.” He paused, then said something else under his breath. Something like, “More than I should let myself.” But then his lips were back on hers, addling her senses and taking over her mind.
A bellow rent the air and jerked Delaney out of the oblivion of pleasure where she floated. She snapped her head up, breaking the kiss to listen. Another sound that she could only classify as a roar broke the stillness.
“What was that?” she asked. Fear, rather than need, had her heart tripping over itself inside her chest. “It sounds like a…wounded animal.”
Finn gave a low rumble that sounded more like a warning growl than anything a human would make, and her heart slammed into high gear. Slowly, dread pulling at her, she turned her head to look directly at him.
To encounter eyes ablaze. Not figuratively. Literally ablaze. Blue flames consumed his irises.
What the hell? Panic spiked inside her, and her breath came out in short, sharp bursts, speeding up as she absorbed what she was seeing.
Adrenaline joined the fear and she shoved his chest. Hard.
She must’ve surprised him, because Finn released her, stumbling back a few paces. She managed to keep her feet under her, then scrambled back, trying not to trip over any rocks in her path.
He held up his hands. “Delaney, don’t—”
She did the only thing she could. She ran.

BLOG TOUR & AUTHOR INTERVIEW for "Hardwired" by Andrea Bills

Hardwired
by Andrea Bills
Publication date: September 1st, 2018
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense
When Navy Seal Operative Luke Kiersey is finally granted leave after five years, he finds himself driving to a house he doesn’t recognize in a town he’s never been to. The house is home to a beautiful woman and a little girl with big blue eyes. Day after day, he drives back only to hide in the shadows and wonder why he can’t seem to walk away from them.
His therapist says is PTSD.
His handler tells him he’s just not cut out to be part of the civilian world.
Luke can’t help but feel like it’s more.
The dog tags that once hung proudly around his neck, now feel like a collar; leashing him to a life that he fears he didn’t choose. After the terrible things he’s done in the name of freedom, could he possibly be worthy of something as precious as the woman and child he continues to watch?
When the two worlds collide, Luke needs his mind to be stronger than the implant the government placed in his back. They’ve told him he can’t survive without the implant they use to control him, but Luke’s wondering if he can survive without the little girl with big blue eyes and the gorgeous woman she calls mamma.

~AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Andrea Bills~

1) What gave you the inspiration for the storyline?

I love this question when asked specifically for this book. I was on a road trip by myself and Halsey’s song Gasoline came on the radio. That was it for me, Luke’s story surfaced and I pulled over so that I could purge the initial plot line from my mind immediately.

2) Are there any hidden themes in the book that you hope readers will discover?

This is tricky. I don’t live a military life, nor do I know anyone in the military so I can’t pretend to know what they go through. However, I hope that the underlying theme of this book is that your PTSD or your disabilities, or even your loss DO NOT define you. Jen deals with loss and she loses herself in the grief, and she wonders if she will always be the widow. Luke’s disability, so to speak, weighs heavy on his mind, and he feels that it completely defines him. He also deals with PTSD, but it goes further than that to include what everyone around him thinks his PTSD does to him. So he knows how he feels and what his PTSD is like, but he also has his therapist, his handler and his Commanding Officer all telling him how his PTSD makes him feel. Again I’m no expert but I feel like that has to be something that happens to our Veterans, and to our military spouses, so I felt compelled to bring that to the surface.
Our military men and women don’t deserve to have everyone else’s preconceived notions about their struggles pushed on them. They have enough to deal with, and I think sometimes helping is simply listening and accepting.

3) Are any of the characters based on real people you know?

Bella is based on my own daughter, and a lot of her mannerisms and the things she says are things my daughter has done. Also Jen’s mom and dad are based on my own parents, which my daughter does in fact call them Mam and Pap. My daughter also demands to always eat with a fork and spoon no matter what’s on her plate because one time my mom gave her both for a bowl of cereal. Last but not least Shatara in the book is based on my niece.

4) Who has influenced you most as a writer?

There are so many influences on my writing both from other authors to just people in my life. As far as literary people, Julie Garwood is a huge influence, as she is and still is my favorite author. I adore her ability to create suspense in her books, and I strive to be able to do the same in my own.

As far as outside of the literary world, my husband is a big influence just simply because he refuses to let me give up on things. He’s definitely not a back seat driver when it comes to me. He’s in my face, inspiring and encouraging me. My favorite is when he becomes angry on my behalf of a bad review, he doesn’t quite understand that they’re going to happen and it’s part of this world, he still gets all chivalrous and wants to swoop in and save the day.

5) If you could have any three literary characters over to your place for game night, who would you invite, what would you play, what would you serve, and why?

Ugh, three is such a small number. I mean is it a typo? Did you really mean like three hundred? Lol

Okay, okay. Sooo, I’d love to have Nick over, he’s from my own work Exchange of Power. He and I just need to have a chat is all so it would be great if he could pop over for dinner. If he came over I would serve blueberry breakfast cake, and we would play, Clue. One because he loves blueberry breakfast cake and the latter because he’s an FBI agent, and his life is solving clues, so who better to play.
Jamie from Outlander is one. I mean do I have to explain this at all? It’s Jamie Fraser; in my house, eating my food. It’s EVERY woman’s fantasy. I would probably order a pizza, simply because I don’t have time to cook when that mans in my presence, and secondly I desperately wonder all the time what he would think of pizza, if Claire can one day pull him into the future. We would play Chess, because I haven’t a clue how to play it, and I feel like I would be learning from the master.
Lastly, Cole from Pam Godwin’s Tangled Lies series. I fell in love with that man in that series! We would eat burgers and fries, because he seems like a burger and fries kind of man, and I would play Twister with him because come on….it’s a Pam Godwin character, that’s bound to be exciting. ;)

6) Do you feel that you can ever have too many books?

No. Never.

Author Bio:
Andrea is a wife, mother and writer from small town West Virginia. She spends her time while she’s not dreaming up lovers and villains alike chasing after her two kids and husband.

Her overactive imagination and her husband’s wacky dreams attribute to her love of the written word. Guilty pleasures include reading all night and Reese Cups.
