It’s been ten years since Shay Sinclair’s parents were murdered by a super villain, leaving she and her sister to fend for themselves. Now at age sixteen, Shay has something that villain wants. Something he needs. After a chance encounter with a superhero in a stairwell, something awakens in Shay, something that could get her killed.

Max Steel has spent the last ten years searching for one particular soul. Now, a coincidental run-in with Shay Sinclair leaves Max closer than he’s ever been to everything he’s ever wanted. But Max hits a brick wall when he goes after her. Unlike other girls her age, Shay isn’t into superheroes. So, if Max wants to win her over and be reunited with the soul inside her, he must get creative. He invites Shay into a seductive world of fame, glamour, luxury, and epic battles with villainous foes.

Now that Shay's in the mix with superheroes and crazed villains, everyone wants a piece of her. A super villain wants to devour her soul, a superhero wants to love her, and Shay just wants to go back to her normal life. It's not like in the movies. In real life, superheroes suck.

BOOK BLITZ for "ISAN" by Mary Ting

ISAN
by Mary Ting
Published by: Vesuvian Books
Publication date: May 1st, 2018
Genres: Dystopian, Science Fiction, Young Adult
THE WORLD HAS CHANGED.
SCIENTISTS WARNED IT WOULD HAPPEN.
Meteors devastated the Earth. World Governments developed plans to help surviving citizens. The United States disbanded and salvageable land was divided into our quadrants — North, South, East, and West — governed by The Remnant Council.
Struggling to survive, seventeen-year-old Ava ends up in juvenile detention, until she is selected for a new life — with a catch. She must be injected with an experimental serum. The results will be life changing. The serum will make her “better.” To receive the serum, Ava agrees to join a program controlled by ISAN, the International Sensory Assassin Network.
While on a mission, she is abducted by a rebel group led by Rhett and told that not only does she have a history with him, but her entire past is a lie perpetuated by ISAN to ensure her compliance. Unsure of who to trust, Ava must decide if her strangely familiar and handsome captor is her enemy or her savior — and time is running out.
EXCERPT:
When the bodyguard with the gun directed the weapon at Roxy, something dangerous ignited in me knowing my team would be next. This foreign existence in my core wanted blood. It wanted death. It wanted destruction. I became a monster. Helix transformed me into a shallow shell to servitude—a perfect model of ISAN assassin.
I pulled my gun from the side of my boot and took aim. The bodyguard who had shot Roxy’s team went down first, followed by the others.
Don’t look at their faces. Don’t make eye contact. But I did look at their faces, and I did make eye contact.
Each guard held my foster father’s cruel face, his steel malevolent eyes. I saw the man who ripped the happiness out of my soul, who towered over me into submission, and molded me into a terrified little girl. For a heartbeat I froze, knees buckling, heart palpitating with trepidation and regret. I became that little girl. A rat, he had called me, and beat me until I stopped crying from missing my mother.
No more. No more. I am no longer that petrified girl.
Then, one after the other, as hunger for revenge drove me, as if each of the men was him, I shot them until they were all down.

Can Ren help to rebuild her confidence and convince her that age is just a number?

~BOOK REVIEW for "Let Me Love You"~

****(4) out of 5 Stars!

This was quite an enjoyable read!  I loved the interaction between the two main characters, and the realistic back-and-forth between them as the nature of their relationship changed.  The peripheral characters were interesting as well, especially Stacey's sister and Ren's friends, and I would have liked to see more of them.  Ren's father was awesome; I totally loved him!  His mother was way too overbearing and reactionary; I would have understood her response if her son were 15, but not when he was 22.

While I enjoyed the story as it was unfolding, the beginning where their history was laid out seemed really clunky and stilted.  I would have enjoyed more a viewing of it as it unfolded, instead of an explanation of it after the fact.  I also thought that the beginning of Stacey and Ren's new dynamic was a bit too rushed, and because of that it was somewhat unbelievable.

But once the story took off, it was very good.  I loved the reaction that Stacey's ex receives from them!  And it was great to see Ren be mature enough to give Stacey the space she needed to come to terms with their relationship in her own time, as well as the fact that he didn't give up on them.

A great, quick read, that was both sweet and hot, and that I definitely recommend to other fans of contemporary romance!

I received a free eCopy of this title from Xpresso Book Tours,
and have willingly provided an honest review.

BOOK BLITZ for "Bound (Magnus Blackwell, #2)" by Alexandrea Weis & Lucas Astor

Bound
(A Magnus Blackwell Novel, #2)
by Alexandrea Weis & Lucas Astor
Published by: Vesuvian Books
Publication date: April 17th, 2018
Genres: Adult, Supernatural

Magnus Blackwell’s past is about to catch up with him.
An evil force has seized New Orleans. Pestilence, suffering, and darkness cloak the city. The citizens are scared and need their mambo to guide them, but Lexie Arden can’t help anyone. A diabolical presence has taken Lexie’s power and severed her ties with the other side.
Magnus Blackwell is fighting demons of his own. Torn between his devotion to Lexie and a spirit from his past, Magnus’s loyalty is put to the test. He must revisit his sins to uncover the key to the hatred ripping the city apart. If he doesn’t, Lexie’s reign as mambo will end.
Their search for answers leads them deep into the darker realms of voodoo — until a desperate Lexie does the unthinkable, and Magnus can do nothing to spare her from her fate.

Excerpt:

Will went to the doors leading to the balcony. “Do you hear that?”
Lexie got up from the sofa, and as soon as she came up to him, a low buzzing came through their back door. “What is it?”
Will hooked her waist. “Get behind me.”
“Why?”
“Just do it, Lexie!”
She curled into his back with her hands on his shoulders, looking around the nape of his neck while he reached for the door handle.
The buzzing got much louder when he cracked the door.
Her breath coming in quick gasps, she stared out into the night.
A wave of black shot up from the courtyard as if alerted by the light escaping from their door. The humming became deafening. Her eyes adjusted to the dark, and then Lexie became paralyzed with terror.
Flies, thousands of them, swarmed like a flock of birds, dipping and rising with a single mind. While poised over the pond, their mass obscured the floodlights from the adjacent buildings.
Aghast, Lexie’s nails dug into Will as the swarm pulled into a giant ball. A black wave flowed over the mass, bending and twisting in different directions, forming a shape.
“Have you ever seen flies do that?” Will mumbled.
Never taking her eyes off the object, she whispered back, “No. Never.”
Right after Lexie spoke, the ball suddenly contracted into a tight, flat orb.
She could not see the flies anymore, but their buzzing remained. Depressions sank into the orb; two eyes, a dip where the nose should be, and a thin line for the mouth.
The face reminded Lexie of a large black skull.
The skull then exploded, and the flies flew off in every direction.
“Holy shit!” Will slammed the doors and set the bolt. “What the hell was that?”
Lexie went around him to the window and peeked outside.
The only things hovering above the pond were a few bright beams from a neighbor’s spotlight. The flies had disappeared.
She stepped back, trembling. “It’s a warning.”
“Any idea who’s sending it?”
She rubbed his back, eager to feel his warmth. “No, but I’m sure I will find out soon enough.”
“Are you all right?” Magnus arrived in her living room. “I came as soon as I felt the black presence nearby.”
“We’re fine.” She looked up. “Just spooked.”
“Who are you talking …?” Will’s voice faded. “Oh my God. Is that …?”
Lexie held her breath as Will stared openmouthed at Magnus. “Can you see him?”
Will closed his mouth and cleared his throat. “Oh yeah.”
She rubbed her head, fighting the tension headache coming on. “This is all I need.”
“Others have seen me, why not him?” Magnus maneuvered closer. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Will.”
Will’s cheeks blanched, but he managed a courteous nod.
“Yeah, it’s nice to know you’re real.”
Magnus smugly grinned. “I’ve always been real.”
A long lapse of silence followed as each of the men—well, man and ghost—sized the other up.
Since she’d first met Magnus, Lexie longed for Will to see him, to know he existed. Her wish finally granted, she questioned if seeing Magnus was good for her husband. Will had stayed on the fringe of her world, opting to support her in any way he could, but leaving her to run her responsibilities without his assistance. She’d preferred things that way, seeking guidance from Titu instead of Will. He had his architecture firm and she her shop. Could they go back to their comfortable existence, or had the tide turned?
“Why is this happening?” Will staggered backward. “Why am I seeing him?”

BLOG TOUR & AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Arthur J. Gonzalez for "Sons of Gods"

Sons of Gods
by Arthur J. Gonzalez
Publication date: January 25th, 2018
Genres: Fantasy, Mythology, Young Adult
Long ago, the wrath of the three God brothers marked the onset of the Great War. The other Gods watched in horror, until they, too, were forced to take sides. Their beloved Mt Olympus collapsed, ruin was brought to all Divine, and the Age of Darkness gripped the world in its clutches. But a group of Gods was wise, and before their impending deaths, they had crafted a pact, committing to one day rebuilding the Territories – the Heavens, Seas, and the Underworld. It would usher in the world they protected and honored out from its darkness. And from it would rise the new Greats: the Sons of Gods.
Cienzo has always had an affliction for metal and fire; never did he anticipate it would one day translate to wielding dormant powers. It is during a journey to fulfill a promise to his dying sister, that he is plunged into a dark and magical world, and where great responsibility is bestowed upon him.
Is he worthy of assuming the throne of the Territories? Can shattering steel and splitting fire change his mind?

~AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Arthur J. Gonzalez~

1) What gave you the inspiration for the storyline?

I have always been captivated by Greek Mythology. My first major introduction was in 7th grade, when I was tasked to play Hades in a class revival of the Kidnapping of Persephone. The parallels between seasons and pomegranate seeds would breed a major revolution of creative thinking for me. It would stay with me forever.

2) Are there any hidden themes in the book that you hope readers will discover?

I don’t think the themes are very hidden. It’s all about believing in the power within yourself, even when you believe that power is nonexistent or undeserving. We are each given something magical in life, and at some point we must step up and decide whether we will honor that gift or not. It is about courage and love, loyalty and loss. Things we all, no matter age or race, will face in a lifetime.

3) Are any of the characters based on real people you know?

There are bits of everyone I know sprinkled into each of my characters. That is how I build my characters. Kayana and Zendaya and smart, deft and fearless. They are inspired by the women in my life: my mother, grandmother, sisters and niece. They are dedicated to those around them, prepared to do what they must to protect the ones they love. Filled to the brim with integrity and loyalty. These are the women that made/make me who I am. The relationship between Cienzo and Isla: it is what I imagined I would do for my very own sister. For the bonds that we have. To the end of the world I would go.

4) Who has influenced you most as a writer?

I learned a lot of my writing from my editor Monika Faulkner. But as an influence, I think of Walt Disney. I read a few of his biographies and was filled with immediate creative fulfillness and energy. I read that he used to urge and challenge his Imagineers to ‘Up’ their work; to stop and ask if they’ve ‘Upped’ it enough. I use this so often. I will stop my work and ask “What can I add right now, what can happen right here, what can I introduce that can ‘Up’ my story?” And so often my entire storyline will change for the better.

5) If you could have any three literary characters over to your place for game night, who would you invite, what would you play, what would you serve, and why?

So, I’m going to have to say any three of the tournament players from Marie Lu’s WAR CROSS novel. First of all, who would not want to attempt game night with the technology of Virtual/Augmented reality?! And what I would serve is a LOT of caffeine so that we can stay up all night playing. I wouldn’t want to give it up.

6) Do you feel that you can ever have too many books?

Never. I can get overly anxious about having too many to get to at once, but one can never have too many stories to read or write. Writing is a magic power. I’d never give that up. What one leaves behind after writing will one day be a relic to their life’s work. It is their legacy. It is the most beautiful form of memorializing a person, and there can never be too much of that.

BOOK BLITZ for "Willow’s Way (The Sweet Life, #2)" by Sharon Struth

Willow’s Way
(The Sweet Life, #2)
by Sharon Struth
Published by: Kensington
Publication date: April 17th 2018
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
The breathtaking promise of the English countryside can lift even the heaviest spirits...
Willow Armstrong, the once-famous “Queen of Weight Loss” and president of Pound Busters, succumbed to stress eating after her divorce. Now the scandal of getting caught on camera binging on pizza, and the internet-wide mocking of her new curves, may destroy her career. Add in a business advisor who drained her finances, and Willow is out of options — until she learns she’s inherited a house in England’s most picturesque locale, The Cotswolds.
Willow’s trip across the pond to sell the property and salvage her company soon becomes its own adventure: the house, once owned by grandparents she never met, needs major work. Plus, single dad Owen Hughes, the estate’s resident groundskeeper and owner of a local tour outfit, isn’t thrilled about the idea of leaving...
Yet as Willow proceeds with her plans, she’s sidetracked by surprising discoveries about her family’s history — and with Owen’s help, the area’s distinctive attractions. Soon, she’s even retracing her roots — and testing her endurance — amid the region’s natural beauty. And the more she delves into the past, the more clearly she sees herself, her future, and the way home...

Excerpt:

Owen cracked open the house door, having knocked twice and gotten no answer. “Willow?”
“You said she was here, Daddy.”
Owen stuck his head inside and glanced around. “She was when I left.”
Henry squeezed into a spot near Owen’s legs, poking his long snout into the door opening. Owen leaned over to grab his collar, but as his finger grazed the band, the dog scooted inside. Before Owen could blink, the canine bolted halfway up the staircase, howling loud enough to wake the dead.
Jilly pushed past Owen. “I’ll get him.”
“Hold on, Jilly—” She took off as fast as her furry friend and hollered his name as she stomped up each step.
Owen debated following them. It was still Willow’s house and barging in would be considered rude. But he had to retrieve his belongings. At least they’d made so much noise, Willow wouldn’t be taken by surprise.
“Daddy, she’s up here.”
He walked up the stairs, following the sound of Jilly’s animated discussion about her school day. When he reached the room, he stood at the doorway.
Willow sat at the head of the bed with her legs crossed, her blond hair mussed on one side. A sheer scarf draped her neck. His gaze traveled the scarf’s length to the lopsided opening of her oxford shirt, which offered a glimpse of her cleavage. He shamefully enjoyed a peek a little longer than seemed right.
“Do you like my hat, Daddy?”
Jilly sat on the bed facing Willow, her legs crossed the same way. She wore a floppy brown hat too large for her head. Henry lay on his side between them, chewing on something.
“It’s gorgeous, baby. Where’d you get it?”
“It’s Willow’s mommy’s.”
He glanced at Willow. She offered a short smile and nodded, but a sadness resonated in her rich blue eyes. Owen wished he could read her mind.
Jilly continued to babble like a gentle brook about her school day while Willow listened intently. The way adults should listen to kids, but rarely did.
When Jilly finished, Willow smiled. “Gosh, that sounds like a fun game. Maybe you can teach me how to play.” She glanced at Owen. “Sorry, I didn’t hear you knock. I was out cold. Maybe I’m still jet-lagged.”

“It can take a little time.” A force tugged at his chest. Sympathy for her. Something he didn’t want to feel. Not if he were to keep a distance while trying to convince her to keep this place and him as caretaker.

BOOK BLITZ for "Eyes of the Tiger" by Patricia Rosemoor

Eyes of the Tiger
by Patricia Rosemoor
Publication date: April 19th, 2018
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance
Jewelry designer Gemma Hewitt has a gift. Gems and jewelry speak to her, which inspires her designs, and also sends her on dark adventures across the globe as she seeks out historic pieces. After her mother is brutally murdered, Gemma inherits her famed jeweled collar, which she hopes will lead her to see the face of her mother’s killer and bring him to justice. Instead, she’s thrown back to 1901 India where she sees the young woman about to be married with a pendant that matches her jeweled collar. When she’s hired to find the entire bridal suite, she hopes she can use the jewels to save her family’s fortune. Can she trust the handsome, enigmatic man who promises to help her on her quest, or is he the one she should be running from?
British reporter/photographer Raj Sinclair wants the bridal suite for his own reasons. Attracted to Gemma, he senses a connection with her as if he’s known her for a very long time. When danger stalks her, he will do anything to protect her.
The treasure hunt takes them to cities from the US to Britain to France, ending in India where the bridal suite is finally rejoined… and three reincarnated souls get another chance to make things right.

Excerpt:

Washington, DC
Finished with breakfast at a nearby café, Raj decided to return to the suite to freshen up and decide what else he could do before Gemma made that call to meet at the museum. He was surprised to learn she had gotten back to the hotel before him.
More surprised to hear her agonized wail as he opened the suite door.
“Gemma, what’s…”
His question died on his lips as he entered the living area, swinging the door shut behind him. Gemma was in the middle of the room, not standing, but crouching, arms up, as if trying to hold onto something invisible. Sobbing as if her heart would break.
He moved to her side, softly saying, “Hey, Gemma.”
She didn’t seem to hear him. Didn’t seem to know he was there. Words tore from her between sobs. Foreign. Hindi. He recognized the language from his childhood, even if he no longer understood what she was saying.
What in the world was happening to her?
She was wearing the hathphool…
He wanted to pull her up into his arms, but he feared that might panic her. So he crouched next to her, murmuring, “It’s okay, Gemma. I’m here now. You can talk to me, tell me what’s wrong.”
Somewhere in the middle of his coaxing, her sobs quieted and she seemed to regain presence. Looking at him through tear-swollen eyes, she focused and appeared a bit shocked to see him.
“Raj?”
Nodding, he stood. “C’mon, let me help you up.”
Taking the hand he offered, she wobbled to her feet but couldn’t look at him. He could almost hear her mind flying, searching for the one explanation he would believe. He led her to an upholstered chair, found a box of tissues and offered them to her. She grabbed a handful and mopped her face.
“Do you want to tell me what that was about?”
She didn’t hesitate. “No.”
“You weren’t yourself.”
She sat frozen, again not looking at him.
“You were very distressed. Not only crying but saying something that sounded like your heart was breaking.”
Finally, she asked, “What did I say?”
“Beats me. I’ve long forgotten much of the Hindi my grandfather taught me. You have no idea?”
“Not that I was speaking Hindi.”
“Tell me, Gemma. What’s going on with you?” He flicked a look at her hand. “Was it the hathphool? Does it have some mysterious power, as legend claims? Did it make you see something that upset you so?”
He didn’t think she was going to answer him. She removed the jewels from around her wrist, pulled off the ring, then looked around the room until her gaze settled on a table bearing a sandalwood box similar to the one that housed the jeweled collar. She started to pull herself from the chair, but he put a hand out to stop her.
“Let me.”
He fetched the box from the table and gave it to her. Her hands shook as she replaced the hathphool on the velvet interior before snapping it closed. Without a word, she passed it back to him. Setting it where he’d found it, Raj took the chair next to hers and reached out to cover her hand with his.
“Tell me, Gemma,” he said again. “Whatever happened to you… not good. If I’m going to protect you, I need to know from what.”
“Not this. You can’t protect me from this.”
“From what?”
Her jaw clenched and unclenched. She couldn’t avoid his question any longer. Her eyes held a mixture of fear and defiance. “The past. You can’t protect me from the past.”
Raj kept himself from visibly reacting. “What past?”
“What Shardul Nair’s magic has shown me.”
Her words made him tense.
She went on. “The life of a woman who lived during the British Raj.”
He somehow kept his voice even when he asked, “What woman?”
“A maharaja’s daughter named Mayura.”
Mayura! Raj started. He should have known. Maybe he had on some level. But he still had to process it as she opened up to him, the words pouring out of her without hesitation. Each piece of the bridal suite had warned Gemma of danger awaiting her. Yet each had let her enter Mayura’s world.
A world he lived in every time he lost himself in Harry’s journal. What the hell? Everything she told him synched with what he’d read. How was this possible without some kind of supernatural force being involved?
“I don’t know how I can keep doing this—finding the other jewels and testing them for more information—but I have to,” she said. “For my mother.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Don’t you see? It’s all coming together. It’s clear the murderer wants the jewels.” Gemma retreated as if she was seeing another reality. “The jewels keep giving me glimpses… I don’t know how to describe it… maybe into his dark soul. Madam Cybil said she saw me through the eyes of the tiger, that the jewels would help me do the same so that I would know how to use my power. I didn’t believe it at the time, but now… maybe it’s possible. And somehow, this Mayura is part of the equation. I saw her with the mangalsutra that bore the jewels of the Navagraha.”
Raj’s pulse thumped, the rhythm speeding up. The mangalsutra his grandfather had passed on to him along with Harry’s journal when he’d become obsessed with it. Should he tell her now?
“I don’t know how much more I can take.”
He took a deep breath. No, not now. When she was on a more even keel.
He couldn’t think of a way to explain without Gemma’s thinking the worst of him. He hadn’t told her up front because he’d begun the treasure hunt well before she had, and he’d been determined that nothing would stop him from seeing it through.
But then the connection with Gemma… the feeling he’d known her his whole life… had thrown him.
His goal hadn’t changed, no matter how strongly he was drawn to her. But Gemma intended to sell the collection to an entertainer! How could he resolve that? Seeing the collection put back together was not only an obsession, but a matter of family honor for him. That was his priority. Somehow, he had to make this go the way it was meant to. Hopefully, he would find a time… find a way to tell her everything.
But not now.
Later, when he was certain he could make her understand.

My trip to URUGUAY!

I haven't posted anything for awhile
as I was out of the country
attending a wedding & visiting family
in Montevideo, Uruguay, South America.

While there, I saw a lot of Urban Art displays,
including these two literary-themed examples...

...and this fairly recent street portrait of the
famous Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano.

My family also indulged me with visiting various book stores,
my favorite of which was probably Más Puro Verso.
It is located in the Cuidad Vieja (Old City) area of Montevideo,
on the Sarandí pedestrian walkway,
not far from the The Gateway of Ciudadela
(the entrance to the old fortress of Montevideo).

The bookstore is huge, selling many products beyond books,
encompassing two floors, including a restaurant.
They also have a pretty decent selection of books in English.

We attended a lot of street fairs,
many of which had one or more displays of used books for sale.
Unfortunately for me, most or all of these were in Spanish.

We ran into this author, Bruno Salvo, a couple of different times
at the Plaza Constitución in Montevideo, as he was promoting his book.
Too bad it is in Spanish and I couldn't read it, or I probably would have bought a copy.
But I did love this cool shirt of his!

BOOK REVIEW for "No One Needed to Know" by D.G. Driver

****(4) out of 5 Stars!

SYNOPSIS:

Heidi’s brother, Donald, is 16 and Autistic. She has always loved playing with him, but now she's 11 and her life is changing. She’s embarrassed to have her brother around and tries not to tell anyone about him. High school boys bully him. When the kids at her school find out about him, she gets bullied too.

It’s not fair. No one seems to understand what she's going through.

But Heidi needs to understand too. She can't change her brother, but she can change how she feels about him, and she can get people to see why her brother is special.

REVIEW:

I found this book painful to read.  I was hurt for Heidi and all the bad things she had to deal with, especially when her so-called friends started bullying her.  And why did they pick on her?  Because she had a special needs brother.  Of all the stupid reasons!  I just wanted to smack the people who were mean to her and Donald.  Of course, at some points, that included Heidi.  It upset me how mean she often was to her brother, just for being himself.

As the mother of a son with Autism (mine a couple of years younger than his sister), I really felt for Donald.  I remember how my kids, now 19 and almost 17, used to play and have so much fun together.  But, much like Heidi in the story, my daughter eventually got to where she felt herself too old to do so.  I still vividly remember the day my son told her, "I sure miss when you were nice and would play with me."  That about broke my heart!  And those were the same type of feelings that I had reading this book.

I was glad when Heidi finally had a name to put to Donald's problems.  Some people fear labels because they are afraid they will pidgeon-hold people, especially those with special needs.  But for those of us to live with them, it is often just easier to deal with and understand if you can put a name to the behaviors they exhibit.

I was also glad when Heidi finally started pushing back against her bullies.  I felt that having them help out in the special needs classroom was a brilliant idea.  Something that all kids should do sometime, regardless of their attitude toward differently-abled kids, but especially for those who pick on them.  I did think that Heidi could have handled things a little better in regards to the apologies from her classmates, but she was still dealing with her own issues as well.

I really enjoyed it when Heidi met Russell, and Alex.  To have someone in her life who dealt with many of the same issues with his own sibling, would certainly make her life easier to deal with and understand.  Not to mention that he had a great attitude about his brother and the other disabled kids he went to school with, including Donald.

The last chapter was absolutely my favorite of the entire book!  I loved it!  Even though I found it very bittersweet in regards to my own kids.

This is definitely a book that I recommend for kids with a sibling on the Autism Spectrum, or with any other disability, or who just want to broaden their horizons and learn a bit more about some of the many diverse personalities out there that make up our kalidescope world.  A great read especially in April for Autism Awarenesss Month!
