EXCERPT:
“We’re…in public.”
“We’re in a private section, Firefly.” He countered, lifting up to stare into my eyes. I lowered my eyes to his lips, licking my own. He lowered his head, reading to kiss me again when he flinched.
“Mother fucker.” He swore under his breath, turning his head. I gave him a confused look, following his gaze to see Elias chilling on the dock, his legs swinging back forth with a wide grin on his face.
“Hey, Mako. You forgot your sunscreen at home. I thought I’d come and bring it to you,” Elias called out, his grin only growing wider. He waved the unfamiliar tube in his hand.
“Sun…screen?” I blinked, my cheeks feeling hot.
He totally did that on purpose,” Lexi mumbled, sounding utterly disappointed.
Marcus groaned, his eyes glowing a bright blue.
I watched the waves near the doc sway back and forth until one large wave formed and crashed into Elias. I tried to hold the set of laughter that threatened to leave my throat, my shoulders beginning to shake as I watched Elias blink, spewing out a stream of water.
I lost it, laughing my head off at his drenched appearance, his gold locks stuck to his face.
“Marcus! Why did you…hehehehe…do that?” I asked, trying to calm the laughter assaulting me.
“Serves him right. Always interrupting me and shit.” He mumbled.
“I’m not cooking for you tonight,” Elias threatened.

Excerpt:

“What are your plans for the week?” Mateu asked me.
“Nothing much. Business has been slow, so I’m thinking of giving a class.” Usually I supplemented my income by giving classes in various forms of magic. I taught runes, potion making, and other activities. Sometimes it was struggle to keep things afloat and earn enough to pay for rent, but my store served a purpose in the community and I enjoyed the work. I also liked being in charge of my own work hours. Like many of the other specialty stores in El Born, I opened and closed my store whenever I wanted. And my customers were okay with it. Most of them had my phone number and I left a note on the door for those who didn’t. If I was nearby, I could return to the store and help them with what they needed.
“Do you want me to tell the other gargoyles to talk up your services? Give you a small marketing push?”
I shook my head. “No, that’s okay, I kind of need this week to prepare. I have a speaker visiting the store next week. It’s going to require a lot of coordination and work. I’ve told the local covens but I’m going to have to send out reminders.”
“Whatever you like. If you change your mind, let me know.” Mateu returned to people-watching.
To drum up work and business, I had put together a little event for witches and wizards. I had invited many of the nearby covens to sign up. I had ordered a lot of inventory and had to send out a newsletter letting them know what was in the store. I hoped that would help increase sales.
“In fact…” My voice trailed off. Mateu’s shoulders had stiffened and his body was on alert as he stared out the window. I tensed. “What’s wrong?”
“Come over here,” Mateu said, still focused on whatever he saw outside the window. I walked around the counter and made my way to him. He got to his feet and stared intently at the street. As soon as I was within arm’s length of him, he asked me, “Do you see that woman?”
“Which one?” I searched among the people outside the store. Locals walked past us going about their daily lives while tourists gawked at everything they saw. Across the street was a larger group of tourists. They were focused on the tour guide who held a cane and pointed at various landmarks around them.
“The one in the red T-shirt. She’s part of the group.”
I resumed my search and spotted the woman he was talking about. She stood across the street, her body turned away from us. She gestured at the same buildings the tour guide did and talked to her companion who appeared to be bored from the restless way her head darted around looking at anything but the building in question.
“Yes? What about her?” Before the words had left my mouth, the woman turned slightly towards us and I immediately saw the problem.
A mark over her eye pulsed with a faint blue glow.
“Do you think she knows someone’s cast a spell on her?” Mateu asked me.

Excerpt:

Swallowing the bile rising in the back of my throat, I close my human eye again and zoom in through the scope. I move the rifle until the crosshairs rest over Drummond’s forehead.
“I’m taking the shot.”
“Wait,” Dax says. “Maybe you shouldn’t.”
Disbelief drops my jaw, but I don’t take my eyes off the president. “What? Why the hell not?”
“Listen to me, B,” he says, his voice sounding closer. I feel him crouching beside me. “If we kill him now, they’ll just say we did it to silence him. Don’t you understand? If we kill him now, he’ll look like a martyr.”
My palms break out in a sweat, and Drummond’s voice fades to an unintelligible warble as my blood begins to rush so fast I can hear it roaring in my ears. Dax is right … but Drummond is in my sights. The man who destroyed our lives and killed my family. The man who murdered Yasmine and threatened to come for the rest of us.
“I have to,” I whisper, curling my finger around the trigger once more, shaking my head to clear it. “We came all this way.”
“Undetected,” Dax argues. “We can leave the same way. It’s not too late.”
“Yes, it is,” I argue. “It’s too late to go back! I won’t get another shot like this.”
“We’ll find another way,” he insists, his hand now on my shoulder. “A way that doesn’t make us look like the terrorists he’s making us out to be.”
I jerk away from his hold and refocus through the scope. “You can only treat someone like shit for so long before they snap. You can’t keep backing people into a corner without expecting them to eventually come out swinging. Drummond wants me to be a terrorist? Fine … I’ll earn my fucking spot on the FBI’s Most Wanted list. I’m taking the goddamn shot.”
Dax whispers a string of curses under his breath, but he doesn’t physically try to stop me. He doesn’t touch me again. I think it’s because, deep down, he wants to see this fucker pay for what he did to Yasmine. He wants to see Drummond fall, even though he knows the consequences we’ll face for it.
I zoom in a little closer … so close it feels like I’m staring directly into his cold, dead eyes. Spittle gathers in the corners of his mouth as he gets really riled up, waving his hands and pointing as he raises his voice to rally the crowd to his side. All around the world, people are buying into this … believing every poisonous word that comes from his mouth.
It’s time to silence him once and for all.
Taking another deep breath, I hold it as I prepare for my moment of truth. I see my father falling to the ground with a bullet in his skull … my mother sobbing hysterically as Skyye’s insides paint our front lawn red. And the hot rage in my veins goes cold like ice, freezing there as the entire world around me goes still.
As I exhale, my finger squeezes the trigger.

COVER REVEAL for "The Billionaire’s Betrayal (Billionaire, #2)" by Mika Lane

The Billionaire’s Betrayal
(Billionaire, #2)
by Mika Lane
Publication date: January 16th, 2018
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
I own the hottest boutique hotel in Manhattan. Only the rich and famous stay here. They’re the only ones who can afford it. And they’re the only ones we allow.
I’m busy, I’m successful, I’m rich, and I can seduce any woman I want. So when I agreed to another god-awful “bachelor auction” fundraiser for some freaking charity, I prepared myself for a date with some crazy chick who blathered on about her cat, and how many children she’d like to have one day.
Thanks, but no thanks.
So when my “date,” the winner of the latest auction of my bad boy self, emailed me to set up a rendezvous, I planned on having one drink and bailing. My assistant knew exactly when to call me so I could fake an emergency.
Only this date was different. Sure, she was beautiful—Manhattan is full of stunning women, mostly looking for rich husbands. But this one was the brilliant CEO of a tech firm. And she could have given two craps about me. Before I knew it, her half-empty martini sat on the bar wearing the slightest smudge of her red lipstick.
Was she beating me at my own game? I couldn’t let that happen. I wouldn’t.

Author Bio:
Writing has been a passion of Mika’s since a young age (her first book was "The Day I Ate the Milkyway"), but erotic romance is now what gives purpose to her days and nights. AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Wiley A Haydon III for "Soul Mirrors"

My love of storytelling traces back to my step-mother, who spun wonderful fantasy stories when I was child. I finished my first novel at sixteen. That first attempt was terrible, but taught me quite a bit about story construction. Though I would start numerous other projects in the following years, I wouldn't actually complete another book for another 21 years. I wasn't idle in that time, though. I earned a degree in engineering, married the love of my life, worked as a semi-truck driver crisscrossing the country, moved from Texas to North Dakota and then came back home. It's been a fun and interesting journey. I really enjoy engineering, but writing was my first passion, and I'm excited to share it with you. I currently live in West Texas with my wife and our two adorable (but weird) cats.

No one knows how human genetics evolved to create Mirrors. No one knows how the evidence of a criminal’s last horrendous act can be confirmed in a single gaze of a child’s
silvered eyes. But just because science can’t explain something doesn’t mean it can’t be used, and this gift is simply too valuable to ignore.

Twins Thomas and Ashley Ross have grown up knowing they would be used as Mirrors for the “good” of humanity. When their powers mature at age twelve, they are taken weekly to fulfill their role. By reliving the most heinous crimes from a perpetrators’ perspective, they alone can assure that no innocent people will be executed, and that the worst offenders are not set free due to lack of evidence.

Justice is not without cost, however. Taking on the memories of others is a destructive process, one that quickly consumes the children involved until most take their own lives. As despair threatens to drown Thomas and Ashley, a distant hope keeps them from succumbing: If they can make it to their eighteenth birthday, their contract with the government will be fulfilled. Changing views on the morality of their role threatens to tear them apart, but the twins struggle to cling to each other and try to construct a fragile life above the weekly flood of horrors.

As their work takes it toll, however, a new question emerges: does survival even matter when you’re already broken beyond repair?

~AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Wiley A Haydon III~

1) What gave you the inspiration for the storyline?

This story got its start way back in 2001. I was a student at a Christian college, and a number of my instructors were preachers at local congregations. When the September 11th attacks happened, almost all of these preachers took off to go be at their churches. There were plenty of hurting and confused people, and they felt it was their duty to answer those questions as best they could in the midst of the chaos. One, however, chose to teach his class. Despite the constant TV coverage and national horror, he ultimately treated the events as if nothing had changed, and was somewhat dismissive of those who had chosen not to teach. It felt like a particularly tone-deaf response, and it bothered me. I wondered if he would have the same reaction if he could see his actions from someone else's perspective.

That was the spark. I started to dig into that idea, and quickly realized that most people would find such an experience unsettling. We all make selfish decisions, and we all lie to ourselves about why we do things. That idea expanded to include Mirrors: children who could show us who we truly are by taking on our memories. What started as a random thought experiment began to consume me. I had so many questions about this interaction, and I was convinced that others would be also intrigued. I decided to write a short story. As my "What if?" questions took me deeper, though, I realized I needed a full-length novel to address it properly.

2) Are there any hidden themes in the book that you hope readers will discover?

There are a couple of themes that are more obvious, but the one that is in the background throughout the novel is the power of empathy. Being able to share your burdens with someone who understands what you are experiencing is an incredible comfort. There's not always words to really convey how we feel, or that can really comfort someone in tragic situations. I've found that an honest "I understand" in that despair is more powerful than a host of platitudes.

3) Are any of the characters based on real people you know?

All of the characters have bits and pieces that I assembled from people I know, but most of them are changed enough that you can't see any one person in them. The relationship between my protagonists, Thomas and Ashley, however, was very heavily influenced by my relationship with my sister as we were growing up. She was always the optimistic, friendly one, and I was the grumpy, brooding, pessimist. Despite the differences, we were best friends and did pretty much everything together. I would say that anyone who knew us as kids would immediately see the similarities.

4) Who has influenced you most as a writer?

I fell in love with writing as a teenager, but ended up getting a degree in engineering instead of pursuing something in the arts. For better or worse, that means I've had very little formal training in creative writing. I learned the techniques of good writing by reading, and I paid particular attention to the writers whose work I enjoyed. As I've been a fantasy buff since middle school, some of the names on that list are Terry Brooks, Robert Jordan, and Brandon Sanderson. In recent years, my wife has been my biggest influence. She's an avid reader and isn't afraid to tell me when something in the story just isn't working.

5) If you could have any three literary characters over to your place for game night, who would you invite, what would you play, and what would you serve, and why?

Hmm. I'm a shy introvert, so the thought of having three people I don't really know over to my house is kind of terrifying. Also, as I mentioned, much of my reading is in the fantasy genre; I think gathering a bunch of spellcasters together to play some competitive games is probably a terrible plan. I think some of the villains would be the most interesting to talk to, but I'm not exactly going to have Sauron over for a cup of coffee, either. Ultimately, I think I'd choose Sam Gamgee from Lord of the Rings (I've always loved his loyalty and determination), Dalinar Kholin of Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series (I have a soft spot for heroic leaders), and the Ghost of Christmas Present from Dickens' Christmas Carol (you can't tell me he wouldn't be a ton of fun.) With that group, I think something cooperative is best, perhaps one of the Pandemic Legacy seasons. We'll let the spirit of Christmas Present cater. I'll bet he'd love that.

BOOK REVIEW for "Blind Beast Mate (Beast Mates, #1)" by Milana Jacks

****(4) out of 5 stars!
SYNOPSIS

When life deals a wild card, play it no matter the cost.

Since the day Rey’s defiance earned her a blinding blow to the head, fear has hovered as close as the guide dog that clings to her side. But the terror that grips her now is almost beyond description.

Like her sister before her, Rey has been sold to satisfy the lusts of one of the alien Beasts that now rule the Earth. If the towering, leather-clad Alpha discovers his prize can’t see, he could kill her with a flick of his claw. Or worse, send her home—where the only mercy she’ll get is a bullet.

From the moment the Alpha Beast spotted Rey smiling tenderly at her flowers, his desire to own her, body and soul, roared louder than his bike’s throaty engine. But the only smiles his new pair aims his way are forced—and oddly off target. She is liquid heat in his arms, yet ignores the notes and gifts he leaves for her.

If he can’t win her over, he can’t trust her with his own truth. And the combined weight of their secrets could destroy everything.

REVIEW
I read a short intro to this story at the end of the FREE prequel "Virgin Beast Mate (Beast Mates, #0)" - and was hooked!  I had to purchase and read this story in order to find out what happens to Rey.

Despite being dealt a pretty crappy hand up to this point, she ends up with a wild card in the form of her mate, Jamie, the Alpha Beast.  At first, he seems like a complete brute, being very abrupt and rude with Rey, treating her more like an object than a person; especially when he tells her that she cannot take her dog with them to her new home.  Of course, he has no idea that the hound isn't just a pet, but is instead her eyes and ears in a dark world.  However, he still appears to be something of a jerk, especially from Rey's point of view, who doesn't have the insight into his true feelings that the reader is afforded.

Nonetheless, the two start to tenatively nagivate their way through their new relationship and living situation, something that proves none too easy for either of them.  Add in some extra drama from outside sources, and it makes for some real interesting times.

I found this dystopian world for humans to be rather dreary and depressing.  They've apparently blasted themselves at least a few generations backwards as far as living conditions and overall status.  The Beasts have things better, but given that they supposedly travelled from light years away to conquer Earth by dominating the humans, they don't seem to be all that technologically progressed.  In fact, their homes appear to be much like ours today, including the presence of televisions for entertainment.

The inclusion of several human BDSM tendancies on the part of the beasts, while it may make for some spicy love scenes, just seems rather weird and out of place.  They come across more like barbarian humans than advanced aliens.

Besides these couple of minor drawbacks, however, I found the book to be quite entertaining overall, especially in exploring the connection that develops between Rey and Jamie.  I'm also looking forward to reading future volumes in the series, at least the next one, "Wild Beast Mate (Beast Mates, #2)," as I am particularly interesting in learning more about the relationship between Vice and Dewlyn.
