Multicultural Children's Book Day 2020 BOOK REVIEWS!

Multicultural Children’s Book Day is in its 7th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those book into the hands of young readers and educators.

Seven years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues.

~ BOOK REVIEW for TimTimTom's
bilingual personalized book ~

****(4) out of 5 Stars

SUMMARY:

TimTimTom publishes bilingual, personalized books, which can be customized for the child in your life.  You just go to their website, where you first choose from one of three stories; I picked the soccer story (because my grandson is a fùtbol fanatic):
La Victoria de Lucas / Lucas Saves the Match
Then you choose two of the ten languages available, in any combination.  Next, you enter the name of the child.  And then you create the avatar image that will be used for that character in the book.  You can pick male or female; then from three different skin tones, four eye colors, and eight hairstyles.  You can even write a personal message that will be printed on the first page.  My finished product looked like this:

REVIEW:

The finished product was delightful!
It included cute little details like soccer motif designs on the inside cover pages.

The story itself was simple and straight forward, with about 30 pages of text, English on one side and Spanish on the other.  The English was a more proper version than we are used to in the USA, utilizing primarily British spelling.  For example: practise (as shown below) instead of practice.  Likewise, my husband (a native Spanish speaker from South America) said that the Spanish was a more formal Spanish than he is familiar with, using verbiage mostly used in Spain rather than Latin America.  I doubt, however, than any child would really notice these things.

Our grandson, for one, was absolutely delighted to read a story staring himself!  I can't imagine many children who wouldn't enjoy such an adventure.

I also really appreciated the diversity of the peripheral NPC players in the story.
And the basic dual language presentation of the tale.

Definitely a book experience that I would recommend for the special young child(ren) in your life!

~ BOOK REVIEW for Omar, el jaguar ~

***(3) out of 5 Stars

Omar, el jaguar
by Andrea Olatunji

 SUMMARY:

This is the story of Omar, a lonely jaguar that wants to make friends. He encounters other animals that invite him to play but he refuses because these don’t look like him. Later on, however, he changes his mind as realizes that they have more in common than he thought. This is a beautifully illustrated story that teaches us about celebrating diversity while enabling children to learn and practice Spanish.

REVIEW:

Full disclosure: I do not speak or read Spanish, but it is my husband's native language.
I had him read the story to me in Spanish, and then translate it into English.

This is the first book published by this author, which was a little apparent.  There just wasn't much actualy story to the tale, even given that it is a children's book.  It starts off with Omar lamenting the fact that he doesn't have anyone to play with.  But then he turns down the invitation to do so from three other jungle dwellers.  Later, he suddenly has an epiphany and starts lecturing everyone about the need to work together and save their habitat.  It just felt like a big portion of the story was left out; like there should have been more substance.  Something such as Omar apologizing for being a jerk, him actually playing with the other animals, then an occurence that caused his sudden change of focus and call for activism.

The artwork was very simplistic, but bright and fun.

The Spanish used was typical conversational language.  It would be easy reading for many children who speak the language, and good learning or practice for those who don't.  Even I was able to pick out a few words that I know, and yo hablo muy poco español.

There was a note in the back with some interesting additional information about jaguars.

The overall themes of diversity, friendship, teamwork, and conservation were good ones.

Certainly a book that I would be happy to share with any Spanish-speaking or learning children that I know.

BLOG TOUR & AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Mikki Noble for "The Last Atlantian"

The Last Atlantian
by Mikki Noble
Publication date:
December 13th, 2019
Genres: Mythology, Urban Fantasy, Young Adult
Spencer did not plan to work on her birthday. She didn’t plan a lot of things, but they happened anyway. Like, when she touched a guy and he turned into a gold statue, or when some stranger appeared to tell her she was in danger. She didn’t plan to see her life forever changed by one simple act, and it still happened anyway.
What Spencer doesn’t know is why. Why is all this happening to her? Why does she have the power to turn people into gold all of a sudden. Who is she really?
And why is this cute guy calling her the last Atlantian?

~AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Mikki Noble~

1) What gave you the inspiration for the storyline?

I had the idea that one of my character’s touches another and turns him to gold. I knew it had a King Midas feel, though I also knew it had nothing to do with King Midas. I was hoping it would have some kind of mythological angle and that’s how it became the story that it is today.

2) Are there any hidden (or not so hidden) themes in the book that you hope readers will discover?

Good question. Hmm, there may be. I hope that people will enjoy a different take on the Atlantis tale but that’s all I can say.

3) Are any of the characters based on real people you know?

No, there may be some similarities to people I’ve met but that’s purely coincidental. I try to write people I know into my stories unless they specifically ask me.

4) Who has influenced you most as a writer?

My friends and family influence me every day. I have great writer friends who keep me going and my family reads my work when they can. My mother has been telling me to publish my works since I was thirteen, so she’s always been extremely supportive.

5) If you could have any three literary characters over to your place for game night, who would you invite, what would you play, what would you serve, and why?

Percy Jackson (Percy Jackson series), Rosemarie Hathaway (Vampire Academy), Ron Weasley (Harry Potter).

I’d have nectar for Percy, junk foods for Rose and Ron (chicken wings, chips and dip, pizza) and some vegetarian options for myself.

Only choosing three was really difficult, but these are either my favorite characters or I think they’d be really fun to hang out with. As for the games we’d play, I’d love to hook up the Wii and bowl. I think it would be a blast.

6) Do you feel that you can ever have too many books?

Yes and no. If I had enough time to read them all then I’d say no. Sadly, I don’t and I have shelves upon shelves of books I really need to dig into.

Author Bio:
As far back as she can remember, Mikki was creating characters and stories in her head. It wasn’t until fate brushed the tip of its wings over her eyes that she began to see that writing was what she was born to do. She loves animals, reading, everything supernatural related, and enjoys spending her free time on social media whenever she can.

BLOG TOUR & BOOK REVIEW for "Dangerous Desires" by Dawn Altieri

DANGEROUS DESIRES

by Dawn Altieri
Publication Date: January 27, 2020
Genres: Adult, Entangled: Amara, Romantic Suspense

SUMMARY

Three years after Emma Sloane’s wealthy fiance’s mysterious death, she’s finally ready to move on and pursue her own dreams. But her plans are derailed when she’s attacked outside her New York City apartment in what she thinks is a random violent incident. Then other women who look just like her start turning up dead…

Homicide Detective Jake Quinn is haunted by the one case he couldn’t solve. When he’s put in charge of a new high-profile murder case, he interviews a victim who escaped a similar attack — and to his shock it’s Emma, the former fiancée of his unsolved murder victim.

Neither expects the sparks of attraction between them. But the killer escalates, clearly targeting Emma, and Jake’s job is on the line. Can he solve this case before it’s too late for both of them?

~ BOOK REVIEW for Dangerous Desires ~

****(4) out of 5 Stars!

This was a good, solid romantic suspense novel.  Emma and Jake are both enjoyable characters, as are many of the half dozen or so peripheral players.  The mystery evolves at a reasonable pace, but doesn't manage to at all keep up with the relationship developing between these two.  Even with repeated warnings from themselves and others, they pretty much just proceed full-speed ahead into things, both physical and emotional.  It definitely seems to compromise the judgment of both on several key items, not least of which is the investigation itself.  There are some false starts and misdirections, along with several twists and turns to the intrigue.  The ultimate resolution is not what I expected; definitely an intriguing plot twist!  However, while we do get an answer to the puzzle, we do not get a lot of details; and I would have really liked more explanation.  The only other negative for me was that both main characters tended to be a bit too self-deprecating, at least within the confines of their own thoughts, to which the reader is often privy.  They were starting to sound like broken records at some points.  But overall this was a nice romance and a good mystery; one I would certainy recommend, especially for those interested in the genre.

~ BOOK REVIEW for Girl Code ~

****(4) out of 5 Stars!

This was a good book with a kick-butt heroine. Mick starts out trying to help a friend avenge a wrong that's been done to her, but ends up inadvertently threatening some very powerful people. Dante figures out very quickly that she is the one behind the hack in question, and also realizes the very real danger that she is in. His first and only thought is getting to her, which he does, even if she isn't happy to see him. Together they go on the run, trying to stay one step ahead of the bad guys who are after them. This tale is heavy on the personal relationship between Mick and Dante, including bridging some major gulfs from the past. What it is light on, however, is any real substance about the actual crime-fighting portion of their endeavor. It also wraps things up very quickly in the end. Basically, it felt like the middle had been left out of story. Still a good read, especially if you just want a quick, romantic suspense where the good guys win and the main couple end up together. But it could have been better, with the plot much more fleshed out.

The “Girl Power Collection” is a celebration of feminism in an unprecedented manner and will serve as an inspiration for millions of readers across the globe.

Over the years, men that have made landmark achievements in different facets of life have often been celebrated with very little stories about bad ass women that have excelled in their respective positions. While there are some works that highlight the fantastic achievements of women in powerful positions, there is no particular project exclusively dedicated to
celebrating the “girl power.”

The compilation contains short stories with the theme of Girl Power in whichever way the author defines it for herself and her readers. The 33 romance stories are narrated in a diverse yet entertaining and inspiring way and will be released in regular intervals throughout 2020.

BLOG TOUR & AUTHOR INTERVIEW with B.R. Myers for "Rogue Princess"

Rogue Princess
by B.R. Myers
Published by: Swoon Reads
Publication date: January 21st, 2020
Genres: Retelling, Science Fiction, Young Adult
A princess fleeing an arranged marriage teams up with a snarky commoner to foil a rebel plot in B. R. Myers’ Rogue Princess, a gender-swapped sci-fi YA retelling of Cinderella.
Princess Delia knows her duty: She must choose a prince to marry in order to secure an alliance and save her failing planet. Yet she secretly dreams of true love, and feels there must be a better way. Determined to chart her own course, she steals a spaceship to avoid the marriage, only to discover a handsome stowaway.
All Aidan wanted was to “borrow” a few palace trinkets to help him get off the planet. Okay, so maybe escaping on a royal ship wasn’t the smartest plan, but he never expected to be kidnapped by a runaway princess!
Sparks fly as this headstrong princess and clever thief battle wits, but everything changes when they inadvertently uncover a rebel conspiracy that could destroy their planet forever.
~AUTHOR INTERVIEW with B.R. Myers~

1) What gave you the inspiration for the storyline?

The idea for Rogue Princess came to me while I was writing a story in which the main character was working on a perfume campaign. The ad was a reimagining of Rapunzel, but instead of a princess being kept in a tower it was a businessman trapped in a high rise office building. After those characters found their happily ever after I started thinking about my next project. The notion of another gender swapped retelling appealed to me and right away I thought of Cinderella. I hadn’t intended to have a sci-fi angle to the story, but I clearly remember the ‘shoe fits’ scene coming to me fully developed, and I was intrigued.

2) Are there any hidden (or not so hidden) themes in the book that you hope readers will discover?

True love will always find a way! I hope readers are entertained, startled and satisfied.

3) Are any of the characters based on real people you know?

No one complete personality, but I do take bits and pieces from real life and put it into my books.

4) Who has influenced you most as a writer?

Ho boy! This is such a tough question. It really depends on what story I’m writing because inspiration comes from all around. It could be music I hear on the radio, or a conversation I overhear on the bus, or even something the yoga teacher says in class. I take whatever I’m meant to have, or rather what my story needs. Whatever inspires my life, inspires my writing.

5) If you could have any three literary characters over to your place for game night, who would you invite, what would you play, what would you serve, and why?

Ron Weasley
Mr. Darcy
Gilbert Blythe

I’d invite my three biggest book crushes over for nachos and beer then play a rousing game of charades. Good times will be had by all.

6) Do you feel that you can ever have too many books?

Never! Although I do go through my shelves regularly and pick out the books I probably won’t read again. I pass those along to friends or I donate them to women’s and teens’ shelters.

Author Bio:
B.R. Myers spent most of her teen years behind the covers of Stephen King, Ray Bradbury, and Lois Duncan. When she’s not putting her characters in awkward situations she works as a registered nurse. A member of the Writer’s Federation of Nova Scotia, she lives in Halifax with her husband and their two children.

BOOK BLITZ for "Cowgirl Heart (The Dalton Boys, #12)" by Em Petrova

Cowgirl Heart
(The Dalton Boys, #12)
by Em Petrova
Publication date: January 20th, 2020
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
It’s not easy to impress a Dalton girl…
It’s not easy being a Dalton, let alone the last unmarried one of the Texas bunch. Keziah, or Kizzy, is drained by all the family weddings, and her sisters keep trying to rope and tie her to any old cowboy in the county. To ensure this doesn’t happen, she takes off for the big city and a job as assistant to none other than the smart, savvy and sexy KC Cohen, the mortgage company billionaire who sees her as something more than a cowgirl.
Knox Channing Cohen has achieved his goal — to build his own billion-dollar business from the ground up and without the help of his wealthy family. He’s also managed to break free of his cowboy origins and strike out on his own, far away from the prestigious ranch he grew up on. But when he receives word of his father’s death, he’s back in the saddle… the last place he wants to be.
Kizzy is dragged along as Knox’s assistant to help him deal with the family business. When she learns he’s not only loaded but a damn cowboy too, she can’t be more blindsided. Now she can see all the carved muscle on the man might not be from hitting the gym so much as hard work. Knox wants to sell out the ranch, but seeing the dark-haired, blue-eyed beauty at home around horses has him second-guessing his beliefs about the country… and wondering if he can remind her that she’s a cowgirl at heart.

Excerpt:

Son of a bitch, he was kissing his assistant… and she was more amazing than he’d even fantasized.
As if realizing the same thing at the same moment, Kizzy drew away.
He kept hold of her, unable to force his hand to let go.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
He shook his head. “No, don’t. C’mere.” He yanked her close again and kissed her hard. Angling his mouth over hers, he applied pressure to her lips that dizzied the hell out of him. As her tongue slipped out to taste his lower lip, he issued a growl and plunged inside.
She melted into his embrace, kissing him back, tongues stroking over each other’s in a dance that was sexier and hotter than anything on this dance floor.
When he’d seen her with that first cowboy, he’d been pissed. But when Corbin got his hands on Kizzy, a white fury had risen inside him. He’d experienced strong feelings of jealousy before, but this… Hell, he couldn’t let Kizzy out of his sight.
The music changed from a boot-stompin’ riot to a slow song, and he swayed her in his arms, letting the emotions he’d been holding back for days encompass him.
There’d be hell to pay for this slip in protocol, but he’d deal with it later. Right now, he had to have her.
“Kizzy,” he whispered against her lips.
Her blue eyes, so close, were a myriad of hues, from sky blue to deep navy specks. She dropped her forehead to his, and he nuzzled her lips, brushing his own back and forth across hers in time to the music.
God, the sweetness of her gripped him so hard, he could barely breathe. When had he ever felt something remotely close to this? The attraction had been there from the beginning, but over the past few days, he’d learned what an amazing woman Kizzy was.
When she reached up and tangled her fingers in his hair, he bit off a groan of desire. To feel her beneath him, to be inside her…
