Author Bio:

Mary Karlik has always been a dreamer. When she was a teen, she read The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, and then sat in every wardrobe in her Nanna's home, trying to open the door to Narnia. She didn't find it, but she did discover her voice as an author: one filled with her young adult self, and grounded in her roots as a Texan and her Scottish heritage, nourished by obscure Scottish folklore. 

You can find her Texas roots in her YA contemporary romance Hickville series , which has been described as "100% solid storytelling," and begins with Welcome to Hickville High, a "lovely story about growing up." 

She digs deep into her Scottish roots - there is magic there, she just knows it - for the forthcoming YA epic fantasy Fairy Trafficking series, beginning with Magic Harvest. 

She makes her home in the beautiful Sangre de Cristo mountains of Northern New Mexico where she is a certified professional ski instructor, but she also loves visiting Scotland where she is currently studying Scottish Gaelic at the University of Highlands and Islands in Skye. Mary also earned her MFA in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University, has a B.S. degree from Texas A&M University, and is a Registered Nurse. 

Mary currently serves as the President of the Young Adult Chapter of Romance Writers of America and looks forward to raising a glass or two of gin and tonic with her fellow writers every year at RWA’s national convention.

~AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Beth Merlin~

1.     What gave you the inspiration for the storyline?  

After graduating from law school, I felt a bit lost. Ultimately, I wasn’t sure I wanted to be a practicing lawyer and regretted my decision not to follow my real passion, which was writing. I remember jokingly saying to my husband that I wished I could run away from my adult life and be a camp counselor for the summer.  It wasn’t a realistic option for me, but that notion ultimately became my inspiration for the book.  

2.     Are there any hidden themes in the book that you hope readers will discover?

Definitely---I hope the readers of the book will walk away thinking about friendship, forgiveness, longing, and the question of whether or not you can ever really go back to your childhood. 

       3.      Are any of the characters based on real people you know?

Not directly, but I think some elements of real life and real people show up in every writer’s works. I definitely modeled some of the fixtures around Camp Chinooka on real counselors and campers I knew. Perry, Gigi’s main love interest, is absolutely a blend of some of the Camp America British counselors I crushed on when I was a camper.  

       4.     Who has influenced you most as a writer?

It’s a corny answer, but probably my mother. Growing up, she was a reporter for our local newspaper and then later worked in PR. When I was a camper, she would send me back my letters red-marked and edited for spelling and grammar mistakes. At the time, I thought she was crazy, but now I so appreciate the value she placed on writing. Some of my earliest memories are of hearing her tapping away on our old Panasonic word processor at 4 or 5 in the morning.  

      

        5.      If you could have any three literary characters over to your place for game night, who would you invite, what would you play, what would you serve, and why?  

  

Such a good question! I think I’d have Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy (mostly because I’d want to hear their banter) and Bridget Jones (so I’d have someone to talk to while Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy talked to each other). I think we’d play Scattegories and I’d serve a traditional English tea and finger sandwiches.
