~AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Laura Maybrooke~
1)
What gave you the inspiration for the storyline?
This story actually
has a curious beginning. I have been writing since my early teenage years, for
about 25 years now. My first story contained set in its world history an event
between Dulcea, the elven enchantress turned war heroine and Dragonmistress,
and the vampire Krath who played a mysterious part in her rebellion.
This
conflict between Dulcea and Krath soon rose to the forefront of my mind, and
the characters turned into more than just names in someone else’s history. They
became to me as dear as friends, and I witnessed their struggle and adventures
many times over in the past twenty years.
2)
Are there any hidden (or not so hidden) themes in the book
that you hope readers will discover?
Dulcea and Krath’s
story is a story of friendship, valor, and courage, even in the face of
seemingly insurmountable odds. On the surface, these two people, an elven lady
and a vampire, are as dissimilar as can be, but they may yet discover that
differences are often only skin deep. That is also something I wish to
advocate.
3) Are any of the characters based on real people you know?
Not in this story,
no. Not intentionally, at least. There may be traces of certain people in some
of the characters; traits I admire, but nothing done consciously.
4) Who has influenced you most as a writer?
My friend Anna, who
has been my supporter and sounding board on this long road to publication these
last 25 years. Without her, this story would never have seen the light of day.
5) If you could have any three literary characters over to your place for game night, who would you invite, what would you play, what would you serve, and why?
I would invite
three splendid detectives and investigators from different time periods, to see
who is the cleverest! Hercule Poirot, Sherlock Holmes, and Matthew Shardlake. I
would engage them in a round of Cluedo’s murder mystery and serve them tea/coffee
and cake!
6) Do you feel that you can ever have too many books?
No! There are
never too many books for me. Too little time, perhaps, but books – never!
Author Bio:
“I live in my own little world. But it’s ok, they know me here.” (Who besides me has this fridge magnet; raise your hand!)
That’s sometimes what it feels like. Who says stories aren’t real? I live in the land of the Midnight Sun and Polar Nights, together with my husband and daughter, and a cast of fantasy characters running around in my head. It’s busy here. Care to stay and chat a while?
Laura Maybrooke is an 80s’ child, who works too much and writes too little, but who’ll never say no to a thrilling romance, a high fantasy adventure, or a cookbook full of delicious treats she’d like to bake one day.
Thanks for hosting today, Jen!
