Rumba (n): the dance of love, a tale of passion, the ultimate romantic connection between two people
Sophie Fuentes is supposed to be getting her family out of Miami. She is not supposed to be falling head over heels in lust—or is it love?—with LA drug boss, Max Ramirez. Especially not when she can’t tell if he’s an angel sent to save her, or the devil sent to destroy her.
Undercover DEA agent Max Romano wants Sophie’s secrets. All of them. And not just for his investigation. The more he knows about her, the better he can protect her from the dangers that threaten her.
The only problem is, he’s not ready for her to learn all of his secrets.
And when she finally discovers the truth behind all of his lies, his entire world explodes into chaos.
Excerpt:
The cover-up comes off first.
“Sophie…”
There’s a warning edge to Max’s voice. One
I choose to ignore.
“Don’t do it.”
A sly wink over my shoulder precedes my
bikini top being untied. I pull it off and dangle it from my finger for a
moment. I glance back to watch his reaction as I let go, delighting when his
eyes watch it land on the deck. Then they track up my half-naked body and pause
on the middle of my back, knowing what he’ll see if I turn around. When my
fingers curl underneath the bikini string at my hips, his gaze finally reaches
mine.
He slowly shakes his head. “No.”
“Por qué? You’ve seen it all
before, right?”
The seam across his forehead deepens, as
if he’s in pain. Pain he wouldn’t be in if he’d just release his fervent hold
on that ridiculous stubbornness of his. You made the rules, buddy.
“How’s that frustration feel?” I
challenge.
His furious eyes narrow. With that, I push
the bottoms down, letting the soft breeze kiss my bare flesh, and kick them off
to the side. The deep rumble I hear from his direction is part angry growl,
part tormented groan. Because I have a cruel streak in me, I give my hips a
quick shake before diving into the calm black water.
No mercy tonight.
And no thinking.
The yacht is docked in its own small
private marina. There aren’t any other boats around, so I’m not worried about
being seen. Plus, the sun set hours ago. Aside from the deck lights, we’re
shrouded in darkness.
I’ll admit this whole no thinking business
is incredibly appealing.
I break the water’s surface to find Max
standing at the edge of the deck, hands on hips, glaring at me. I blow him a
kiss and backstroke through the pleasantly cool water.
“You think you’re clever?” he calls out.
“Jump in if you want to do something about
it. The water’s just fine.”
He grunts, shifting on his feet. His lips
tighten into a flat line, clearly fighting with himself.
“Come and teach me a lesson, papí.”
That seems to do the trick. His face
darkens as he unbuttons his white shirt. I watch unblinking as he removes it,
exposing his bare muscular chest to the moonlight. His compact abs ripple with
his every movement. His hands go to his belt, deftly removing it with dexterous
fingers. I wait on bated breath for a glimpse of his noticeable bulge, but he
switches to his shoes.
I raise my eyes to his, glowering.
He blows me a kiss and winks. Smartass.
He clearly knows what I want. And I know
what he wants. I just have to play this right if we’re both going to be
fulfilled.
Finally, he shoves his slacks down,
revealing black boxer briefs. I’m biting my lip in anticipation when he pushes
those briefs down his strong thighs. The light casts on his long, thick length
as it bobs, jutting out beneath a small thatch of black hair. His shaft is
smooth, the mushroom head tipped in pre-cum. I remember how that girth feels
inside me, stretching me, massaging every part of me.
This plan better not backfire.
“Christ, woman,” he rasps. “You’re going
to ruin me.”
He dives into the water, his body cutting
through it with the grace and precision of an athlete. Someone used to honing
his body into a weapon that will work for him, rather than against him. With
every physical exertion, a man like Max becomes stronger, more powerful. More
adept at ruling over others.
He's a dangerous man. In so many ways. I should
fear him.
But I don’t. Not even close.
