Seventeen-year-old Claire Collins has a plan: get into college and leave North Carolina behind. What she doesn’t have is an idea for how to get rid of the local football star and womanizer extraordinaire — Adam Meade, who she can’t even avoid (despite many efforts), because Claire’s dad is the high school football coach.
Seventeen-year-old Adam Meade never fails. He always gets what he wants… until he meets Claire, the new girl who leaves him unnerved, pissed off, and confused. But there’s something about her that he just can’t resist…
With the bite of lemon meringue pie and the sugar of sweet tea, Surviving Adam Meade is a sexy and compelling young adult novel about two strong-willed people who think they know what they want but have no idea what they need.
~AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Shannon Klare~
1)
What gave you the inspiration for the storyline?
Surviving Adam Meade was inspired by my high school,
family, and life experiences. Growing up, my dad worked a job where he was
transferred quite a bit. When I was a teenager, he was transferred to a small
town near Lubbock, TX. The town was exactly like Pader. Tiny. Everyone was born
and raised there. Football was huge.
After making great friends, I grew to love the town and the
people. So, when I started writing Surviving Adam Meade, I knew I wanted to
incorporate those elements and I knew I wanted Claire to have the same
experiences. The story developed from there, but I added events from my college
years as well. It’s kind of a modge-podge of life experiences.
2)
Are there any hidden themes in the book that you
hope readers will discover?
Yep! Be upfront, be
honest, and always be yourself.
3)
Are any of the characters based on real people
you know?
Absolutely! Case and
Riley are both based on people I know. I
wouldn’t say Adam is directly based on someone, but I did pull pieces of his
personality from someone I know.
4)
Who has influenced you most as a writer?
Nicholas Sparks. I
really got into his books when I was eighteen and fell in love with his
characters and their backstories. The
tragic relationships and the way he weaved their stories so seamlessly together
really influenced how and what I wanted to write. I’m nowhere near his caliber, but I hope some
day to be on that same level of amazingness.
5)
If you could have any three literary characters
over to your place for game night, who would you invite, what would you play,
what would you serve, and why?
This is a tough one!
I’m inclined to only invite Harry Potter characters because I would
literally fangirl forever, but I’ll try to give you some variety. Professor McGonagall (Harry Potter), Robert
Langdon (DaVinci Code/Dan Brown Books), and Jay Gatsby (The Great Gatsby).
Pretty eclectic bunch, so we’d probably order up pizza and
play Scrabble. I think it would be super
fun to watch McGonagall and Langdon go back and forth on conspiracy theories
and whatnot, because she would more than likely know everything. Gatsby just seems like a fun guy who deserved
better, so maybe he would have fun meeting someone from the Harry Potter
world.
6)
Do you feel that you can ever have too many
books?
No! There’s never
enough books.
