BLOG TOUR & BOOK REVIEW for "Rise (Spelldrift: Coven of Fire, #1)" by Sierra Cross

Rise
(Spelldrift: Coven of Fire, #1)
by Sierra Cross
Publication date: June 15th, 2017
Genres: New Adult, Urban Fantasy
I closed the door on magic long ago... the day it made me an orphan.
Ten years ago, the Coven of Fire sacrificed their lives — my mother among them — to hold off an overwhelming demonic force. Now it’s back.
As a poorly-paid bartender, how can any of this be my problem? But Callie, another orphan of that battle, swears I’m the key to reviving the coven. And there’s an incredibly sexy guardian stranded on my couch who’s promising to help me stop the demons and keep the veil between the realms standing.
One problem: I’ve never been able to use magic. Our local bad boy warlock assures me I have the talent, but even if I did, we don’t have enough witches to complete a coven. The only way to survive is to pull together this pack of magicborn misfits, who have more secrets than spells, into a makeshift coven.
Can we — three untrained witches, a sarcastic warlock, and an overly intense guardian — take back the city... before the demongate falls and the forces that killed my mother destroy us too?

~BOOK REVIEW for Rise (Spelldrift: Coven of Fire, #1)~

****(4) out of 5 stars!

Funny story: I somehow accidently signed up for this reviews-only blog tour with Xpresso Book Tours.  I was quite confused when I received my review copy, but decided to go ahead with a read and review.  And I’m glad that I did, because this is SUCH a good book!

Alix has been dealt a series of low blows by life in general and some unknown enemies in particular.  Yet she’s still a virtuous person and a kick-butt defender of what she believes is good.  Luckily, she discovers a few close friends, both old and new, who are willing to help her try to set things right.  Their biggest challenge appears to be thwarting the plans of a power-hungry bad guy bent on taking over the world.  Although nothing much seems to go their way from start to finish, and they end up having to employ means very untraditional.  Part of this stems from Alix having been declared magically deficient as a young girl, despite everyone around her seeming to think that she is quite powerful.  Nothing is really as it seems though, with danger and unknown enemies lurking around seemingly every corner.  Alix and her friends will have to employ some very unconventional methods to try to achieve their goals.

Much is revealed in this book, about Alix, her friends and family, her past and future, as well as those closest to her.  But there is obviously still so much more to learn about everyone and everything.  I can’t wait to read further books in the series, and hope we are able to learn so much more about many of the things only hinted at or simply left unexplained.

I received a free eBook copy of this title from Xpresso Book Tours
and have willingly provided an honest review.
