BLOG TOUR & AUTHOR INTERVIEW for "A New World - Contact" by M.D. Neu

A New World – Contact
by M.D. Neu
Publication date: February 4th, 2019
Genres: LGBTQ+, Science Fiction
A little blue world, the third planet from the sun. It’s home to 7 billion people with all manner of faiths, beliefs and customs, divided by bigotry and misunderstanding, who will soon be told they are not alone in the universe. Anyone watching from the outside would pass by this fractured and tumultuous world, unless they had no other choice. Todd Landon is one of these people, living and working in a section of the world called the United States of America. His life is similar to those around him: home, family, work, friends and a husband.
On the cusp of the greatest announcement humankind has ever witnessed, Todd’s personal world is thrown into turmoil when his estranged brother shows up on his front porch with news of ships heading for Earth’s orbit. The ships are holding the Nentraee, a humanoid race who have come to Earth in need of help after fleeing the destruction of their homeworld. How will one man bridge the gap for both the Humans and Nentraee, amongst mistrust, terrorist attacks and personal loss? Will this be the start of a new age of man or will bigotry and miscommunication bring this small world to its knees and final end?

~AUTHOR INTERVIEW with M.D. Neu~

1) What gave you the inspiration for the storyline?

My stories all typically start with ‘what if’. For this novel a couple of things happened. One, I had the ‘what if’ moment. What if aliens showed up tomorrow? Two, I had the main character Todd and the other main character Mirtoff start talking to me and telling me their stories. But, the big thing was, my day job is working for a non-profit that handles a lot of immigration and refugees and it amazes me what some of these people go through. So, as the story started to come together I wanted to tell a story about that, but as a Sci Fi story. I wanted to see how it would affect our world as it is right now. What would we do? How would we react? How would this affect global politics? How would it affect religion? What affect would it have on social issues? All those questions we ask about immigration and refugees, I wanted to address in a Sci Fi setting.

2) Are there any hidden themes in the book that you hope readers will discover?

LOL. I think I answered that in your first question, but I will expand a bit. People are going to see a big mirror reflected back on themselves and I think (or I hope) they will ask themselves would that be me?  Would I be that character? Am I like that?  One of the big themes other than Immigration and refugees is religion. If you think about religion today, we are the only game in the universe; most religions say we’re it. There are only humans and nothing else, well when aliens show up, in the book, that whole belief has to change. How will people react to that?

3) Are any of the characters based on real people you know?

In A New World-Contact there are two characters that are a mix of people I know in real life. One is Dan and the other is Kati. Both these characters are sharp tongued and crass, but they are two of the most giving and wonderful people in the world, however, people get hung up on what they say and how they talk. In fact, my Editor and my Publisher made me soften them so they weren’t as offensive. Which, was a bummer, because these characters were a mix of actual people I know and love. In the book what you read is how they are, and I wanted to show that. It’s important for us to stop getting so hung up on words and how we talk, it’s the character of the person not what they say. I understand words have power, but the power they have is the power we give them and I think we need to take back that power. Anyway, so yes, Kati and Dan are based on actual people who I love and adore very much.

4) Who has influenced you most as a writer?

I’m inspired by the great Gene Roddenberry, George Lucas, Stephen King, Alice Walker, Alfred Hitchcock, Harvey Fierstein, Anne Rice, and Kim Stanley Robinson. An odd combination especially since several aren’t actual writers, but one that has nonetheless still influenced my writing. These people all have a unique way of telling a story and I adore them for it, and what they all do so well is create rich worlds that we can’t help but get sucked into. I hope I’m able to do that as well.

5) If you could have any three literary characters over to your place for game night, who would you invite, what would you play, what would you serve, and why?

Oh dear. Um… wow. I’ve had to spend a few days on this question, because it is so difficult. I think I would have to go with Louis (from Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice), James Quayle “Jim” Burden (from My Antonia by Willa Cather) and Nadezhda “Nadia” Chernyshevski (from The Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson) I know that is a crazy mix, but I really like all these characters. They are all so different and to me they are a bit of the same. Each, to me, is kind of in a situation that they didn’t really have full control over, and end up having to make some difficult choices, so they are fun to read. For the game I would keep it simple with a dice game called 10,000 it’s easy to learn and would allow us the opportunity to chat. With Louis being a vampire, I suppose a trip to the blood bank would be in order, or maybe he could dine before he arrived. As for Jim and Nadia I would make homemade chocolate chip cookies and have cheese and crackers. Perhaps a nice bottle of wine and with dessert a port.

I would want to keep the evening simple so we could chat and so I could get to know more about them. That would be the whole purpose, I would want to pick their brains and learn all I can, see what they think about the novels they’re in and see what got left out.

6) Do you feel that you can ever have too many books?

I enjoy reading, but I’m not a book collector, I don’t typically reread books. I tend to read them once and move on, I have a pretty good memory so I can tell you about every book I’ve read, what I’ve liked and what I haven’t, so with that, I don’t get the same enjoyment out of rereading as others do. If that makes any sense.

BOOK REVIEW for "Balance of Mayhem (Mayhem Wave, #4)" by Edward Aubry

****(5) out of 5 Stars!

SUMMARY:

For five years, Dorothy O’Neill has had someone else living in her brain. Strontium, the witch who sacrificed herself to save Dorothy and the two children in her care, saved her own consciousness by fleeing into Dorothy’s mind, a tactic she thought would be temporary. Despite the best efforts of the Council of Mages to regenerate Strontium’s body and restore her to it, that state of affairs is starting to look permanent. So, when an opportunity presents itself to Dorothy to free Strontium and have her own mind to herself again, it sorely tempts her. All she has to do is embark on a quest with Felicia Kestrel, an assassin who has been until this point Dorothy’s mortal enemy.

Felicia seeks a scale from the armor of the legendary dragon Hypatia, a relic of the non-real world she believes has survived the Mayhem Wave, and whose sole purpose is to heal. She needs a witch to help her employ its magic and use it to heal herself of an undisclosed malady, and claims it has the power to restore Strontium to her own body. Joining her will make Dorothy a fugitive. Passing up this opportunity could mean spending the rest of her life with Strontium exiled in her head.

Enlisting the aid of a pixie to protect her, and armed with a magical sword, Dorothy leaves her home, trusting that the woman who tried to kill her once won’t do so again. The quest for the Scale proves trickier than expected, with dangers beyond Dorothy’s experience, and the threat of an unknown enemy who apparently desires very badly for her to fail. Each step along the journey brings her closer to getting her life back and freeing her friend, but also brings new and contradictory information about the object they seek, and Felicia’s reasons for seeking it may be far more sinister than she has revealed.

REVIEW:

Once again, as this story begins, a significant amount of time has passed since the last novel ended; this time five more years.  As with previous volumes in the series, I anticipated being upset by the perceived missed events during that time, but it really wasn’t an issue.  We drop right back into the lives of these characters whom we’ve come to know so well, have some brief catch-up as to what their lives are like now, and then just jump right into the story!

Something happened.  A fight?  No, an argument.  Hurt feelings.  Strontium had made a joke about Ian, once her son, now Dorothy’s.  She laughed.  Claudia, Dorothy’s life-partner and co-parent, didn’t like being left out.  Sometimes the complicated nature of their family overwhelmed them all.

And what a story it is!   This book is pretty much entirely Dorothy’s tale to tell.  (Apparently, since Harrison had his own book, the author determined that it was only fair for Dorothy to get hers as well.)  Of necessity (after the events of Mayhem’s Children), Strontium obviously plays a significant role here also.  Claudia makes some brief appearances in the beginning and takes on a more significant part later on.  Bess and Sparky both came along for the ride, too.

“I would ask you what this is about, but I think I’ll save you the trouble of making up a cover story.  Thanks for trusting me.  I won’t let you down.”
“Let me down?” said Dorothy.
Sparky grinned.  “Every quest needs a pixie.  We come in very handy.”
Dorothy avoided eye contact.  “I never said anything about a quest.”
“Yeah, that’s cute.  When you’re ready to roll, give me a ring.”

The biggest surprise of this book is quite simply the identity of the other main player.  Next to Dorothy, the most significant character is Felicia, formerly Agent Kestrel, the assassin who last-seen was trying to kill Dorothy and her compatriots in the previous volume.  Having now been cursed with an empathy spell, however, Felicia is not the same person we became familiar with in Mayhem’s Children.  And it is in fact her desire to lift this curse from herself that starts them on the path to this grand adventure.

What’s the catch?
“What makes you think there’s a catch?”
Life is a tradeoff, kiddo.  Magical fixes don’t come cheap.  It’s the balance of mayhem.  That’s a powerful good take, so what’s the give?
“I had to make a deal with an assassin,” said Dorothy.

Apart from brief appearances here and there by Harrison and some other minor male characters, this narrative contains an almost exclusively female cast.  That being said, however, this is certainly not what would normally be considered a “girly” story at all.  In fact, the females pretty much spend their time fighting, treasure hunting, and otherwise kicking butt.  Indeed, this is a great example of female empowerment, even more impressive when considering that it was written by a male author, who still manages to produce characters that ring true and appear quite real.

Dorothy wrapped her hand around Bess’s hilt and drew her slowly from her scabbard.  As she lifted the blade vertically in front of her face, Eric giggled.
Do you need my protection?
“I don’t think so,” said Dorothy.  “Not at the moment.”
“Did she just ask if she should kill me?” asked Eric.
“Something like that.”
“Ha! Fantastic!” He clapped his hands once.

There are some down times where the pace slows down and it occasionally even gets a tad boring, but by and large things keep moving at a strong clip, with lots of action throughout the narrative.  As usual in the Mayhem world, things are not always as they seem and there is a LOT going on at all times.  There are plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader entertained and on their toes (or totally confused, if you don’t pay attention!).

“How much trouble am I in?”
“We’re still sorting that out,” said Harrison.  “Claudia? Can you take a walk, please?”
“You okay here, Dotty?” asked Claudia.
“I have no idea.”

The next volume is purportedly the last in this series, and while I am hesitant to see visits to this world come to an end, I am anxious to discover what the author has in store for us!

I received a free eBook copy of this title from the author,
and have willingly provided an honest review.

BOOK BLITZ for "Dethroned (An Inimical Prequel Novella)" by Genevieve Iseult Eldredge

Dethroned
(An Inimical Prequel Novella)
by Genevieve Iseult Eldredge
Published by: Monster House Books
Publication date: June 19th, 2018
Genres: Urban Fantasy, Young Adult

For eighteen-year-old Rouen Rivoche, being a fairy princess isn’t about fancy parties and happily ever afters.
Rouen’s people are the dark Fae whose powers of lightning, thundersnow, and all things Winter make them cold, severe, and 100% intolerant of rebellion.
Too bad being a rebel is in Rouen’s blood.
Against tradition, she’s teamed up with Syl Skye, the sleeper-princess of the fair Fae — a mortal enemy who Rouen should want to kill but only wants to kiss. Plus, to be with Syl, Rouen’s masquerading as a glam goth-rock star and human high school student. Honestly, Rouen doesn’t think things could get any more complicated.
Then, she discovers she must become Queen of the Winter Court or all her people will die. No pressure.
Now, dark forces are amassing in the Winter Court, turning Rouen’s people against her and blocking her path to the throne. Even Syl with all her powers of white flame and Summer can’t stop this new kind of evil.
Because betrayal cuts close when it’s someone you love… and now it looks like Rouen’s going to be dethroned before she ever becomes queen.

Excerpt:

Chapter One
Rouen

There’s nowhere I belong
No home, no hearth
No sing, no song
A princess with no kingdom to rule
– “Nowhere I Belong” – Euphoria
It’s December 24, Christmas Eve in the mortal realm, and you know what that means.
Only fifty-four days to go. Fifty-four days until the Lunar New Year.
Until I take my rightful place as Queen of the dark Fae.
No more being Rouen, princess-assassin and rebel. Once Father steps down—and he said he would—I’ll take his place.
Half of me, my dark self, says he’s lying through his fangs again. But the other half of me remembers the father-before, the man he was before our realm was crippled by our mortal enemies, the fair Fae. That man taught me to fight, to tap into the Winter in my royal blood and hear the wintry nightsong running through our Dark Faerie realm like a secret language.
The Adamant King. He was a good father and a great king—powerful but even-tempered, severe but just.
That’s the man I could trust. That man would keep his word to make me queen.
Even though there’s never been a dark Fae queen. Ever.
I’ll be the first. I can’t wait to rule, to do whatever I want, to be with whoever I want.
In fifty-four days.
But who’s counting?
“Not you,” Syl murmurs sleepily as we lie on the beat-up couch in the dressing room of our local club/hangout, the Nanci Raygun. It’s a snug room wallpapered with faded band flyers and covered in peeling spray paint art. The best thing is the comfy couch that’s ideal for snuggling with your girlfriend.
“Nope. Not me.” I kiss the top of Syl’s red curls. She knows me too well.
Just like I’m the princess of the dark Fae, Syl’s the princess of the fair Fae.
We’re complete opposites. I’m everything Winter—storms and squalls and brutal cold, unyielding ice and thundersnow. My Syl is the epitome of Summer and sun and brightness, with the power to purify dark magic with her white flame.
We met when I tried to kill her.
Technically, we’re mortal enemies. Winter. Summer. You get the picture.
Long story short, I tried to assassinate her. Not my finest moment, but I was controlled by Circuit Fae black-magic—a Moribund infection that stole my will and forced me to hunt her down when she was a mere mortal. Sleeper-princess that she is, though, she Awakened to the fair Fae power inside her.
Hoo-boy, did she give me a hard time. I loved it. Still do.
Syl snuggles in closer. Her nearness sends a spike of warmth shooting through me. She leans her head on my shoulder. “Is it time for your gig yet?”
Ancestors, I hope not. I’d rather lie on this couch with her forever. Lazily, I look past the Euphoria fliers plastered all over the dressing room and check the faded Blue Bee Cider clock on the wall. Almost 11 p.m. “Ten minutes.”
Ten minutes till I step onstage and take on the Euphoria half of my mortal guise. The other half is a seventeen-year-old high school junior, but this is more my style—local legend and goth rockstar violinist. Thanks to my powerful Glamoury, only Syl, her mom, and a few kids at Richmond Elite High have put the Rouen-Euphoria connection together. Otherwise, the human paparazzi would have a heyday with us.
As it is, they mostly leave us alone. Good thing, too, since tonight, I want some peace.
Tonight’s special.
In a little bit, Syl will be headed off on her own. Her task is less glamorous, but far more important. She has to leave to grab our Christmas Eve dinner.
I’ve never had a proper Christmas Eve dinner. It’s a mortal thing and very different from my people’s Dark Yule celebrations (which involve a lot of mayhem and destruction), and I’m looking forward to it.
Syl turns her face into my shoulder and says something like, mumble, mumble, don’t wanna, mumble, mumble, cold outside, mumble.
So. Adorable. I kiss the top of her head, inhaling the heady scent of sunshine and vanilla. My sweet fair Fae princess.
I’d do anything to protect her.

BLOG TOUR & AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Genevieve Iseult Eldredge for "Ouroboros (Circuit Fae, #2)"

Ouroboros
(Circuit Fae, #2)
by Genevieve Iseult Eldredge
Published by: Monster House Books
Publication date: March 27th, 2018
Genres: LGBTQ+, Urban Fantasy, Young Adult
Syl’s a princess of the fair Fae.

Her girlfriend Rouen is a princess of the dark Fae.

Mortal enemies. Girlfriends.

Relationship status: It’s Complicated.
All introverted geek girl Syl Skye wants is to get close to her girlfriend. But when you can kill with a simple touch, a normal date night’s not really in the cards. As it happens, Syl is also a sleeper-princess of the fair Fae. Last year after a freak accident, her power Awakened, granting her white flame to purify the darkness.
Rouen Rivoche is that darkness — a dark Fae princess whose power to bewitch mortals is as terrifying as the violet lightning she controls. Rouen is Syl’s total opposite. Her mortal enemy.
She’s also Syl’s beloved girlfriend.
And even though they joined forces to defeat the evil Circuit Fae who harnessed the killing magic in technology to take over the school… that was so last year.
Now, Syl’s touch could mean Rouen’s death. Her increasing power is spiraling out of control, threatening to burn down everything she and Rouen have built together.
Their lives, their love, their very world..

~AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Genevieve Iseult Eldredge~

1) What gave you the inspiration for the storyline?

I’ve always wanted to write a story about the Fae, but I wanted a new twist. Since in modern days, much of our world is urbanized, the wild places of the earth are diminishing, and with that, the power of the Fae. But tech is everywhere. So some enterprising Fae decided to harness the magic in technology, and the rest is…for Syl and Rouen to deal with for 5 books!

2) Are there any hidden themes in the book that you hope readers will discover?

It was important to me that good and evil not be equated with the color of a character’s skin.
I didn’t want “dark Fae” to mean “dark-skinned” or “fair Fae” to mean “fair-skinned.” I wanted everyone to feel like they could be part of the CIRCUIT FAE world. So I took on a more poetic interpretation of “dark” and “fair,” where it was one’s thoughts and deeds that made them good or evil, and skin tone was irrelevant in that regard. It felt like a logical, necessary leap.

3) Are any of the characters based on real people you know?

No. I don’t really believe in “make me mad and I’ll put you in my book.” ;)

4) Who has influenced you most as a writer?

My biggest influences are my favorite authors: Malinda Lo, Sarah Waters, Sabaa Tahir, and Leigh Bardugo

5) If you could have any three literary characters over to your place for game night, who would you invite, what would you play, what would you serve, and why?

I’m going to fall back on my previous answer for this one, simply because it’s better than anything else i could conceive of.

I’d arrange a Girls Night for Daenerys Targaryen, Elphaba, and Mary Poppins.

Daenerys, because seriously, have you ever met a lady more in need of a Girls’ Night? Elphaba because you just know she’d be a delightful grump about everything. Mary Poppins because she has good manners, and I feel like she’d make sure no one cheated (I’m looking at you, Dany!) Plus, she is a Time Lord so we needn’t be worried about the night getting away from us.

I’d serve a variety of takeout: pizza, Thai food, Chinese, Mexican, because you know Dany’s probably tired of all that ale and lamprey pie. Plus, I’m sure she gets asked all the time to just, you know, fly the dragons over to Dorne to “pick up” some Dornish wine “on the way.” I’d make sure there were vegetarian options since Elphaba might be sensitive about eating Animals. And tea, because it’s very British and so is Mary Poppins.

Because I’d want to keep it light, we’d play Risk. Because what’s lighter than a game of world conquest among ladies who ACTUALLY want to take over the world? :P (Well, except maybe Mary Poppins…)

After consoling Dany that no, there are NOT any Dragon troops, and telling Mary Poppins that no, we cannot just jump into a chalk drawing and pop out in Asia to surprise-attack Elphaba (who is still grumpy about there being no Oz territory), I’m pretty sure Elphaba would win since, according to Once Upon a Time canon, wicked always wins.

6) Do you feel that you can ever have too many books?

Is this a trick question? *looks at stacks of books I’ll never get through* ;)

BOOK REVIEW for "Mayhem’s Children (Mayhem Wave, #3)" by Edward Aubry

*****(5) out of 5 Stars!

SYNOPSIS:

Eight years have passed since the Mayhem Wave forever altered the world to a blend of science and magic, and since Harrison Cody rescued twenty-eight teenage girls from human traffickers. Now they are disappearing, and he suspects their former captors, followers of an entity of ultimate power and evil, of an elaborate revenge scheme. An assistant director in the New Chicago Security Agency, Harrison puts his government resources to the task of protecting these women, and recovering the ones already lost. But Harrison did not just rescue them from villains those many years ago, he also adopted them, and that relationship holds the key to the true nature of their present danger.

Dorothy O’Neill, another of Harrison’s adopted daughters, though from very different circumstances, has taken five-year- old Melody Cody, Harrison’s only child by blood, under her wing. As the missing persons crisis intensifies, Dorothy discovers she and Melody are targets as well. When the NCSA headquarters are attacked by a dark wizard with a colony of giant bats, the two of them flee into the woods to evade capture.

Separated by hundreds of miles, and with no means of communication, Harrison and Dorothy become entangled in the schemes of a monster who hopes to alter the world once again at the cost of all they hold dear. And as Dorothy finds an inner strength and new abilities she never dreamed of possessing, she comes to suspect Melody may be something more than she appears.

REVIEW:

I was at first irked that 8 YEARS had gone by in the Mayhem world since the events of the prior installment in this series.  But - much like still just clicking with a dear friend that you haven’t seen for a long time - the storyline soon won me over, and then swept me away!  There were plenty of now familiar (and more mature) characters, and also several new faces.  As usual, all of the players were unique and memorable, carving out individual places for themselves in the events that unfolded.  That is one thing that I really appreciate about this author’s work is how distinctive the different personalities are.  You can just about picture them as specific people, each like an old friend (or at least acquaintance); not just a random group of people thrown in to fill out the plot, like the faceless crowd at a soccer game.

"Then it's someone only you can see, sir."  In the post-Mayhem world, observations of impossible things rarely prompted confusion or the need to lie about them.
"Possibilities?" asked Harrison, eyes still on the man.
"Illusion," said Milton.  "...a curse...a wizard might be able to cloak himself from some people but not others... a mundance hallucination, brought on by stress or drug use... Ghost, perhaps?"
"Oh, shit.  Why didn't I think of that?  I'm going outside.  I think he wants to talk to me."
"Would you like an escort?"
"Bodyguard?"  He looked down at the ghost of his friend.  "No, I'm good."

I was so glad to have Dorothy back and at center stage in this volume, after her veritable absence from the last book!  This tome was somewhat reminiscent of the first installment, with Harrison and Dorothy portrayed in alternating chapters from their individual points of view.  Much is going on with her even before the intrigue that encapsulates the main plot points.  As things evolve in the story, so too does Dorothy, very quickly becoming much more secure in who she is, and much wiser overall.  And that’s not even mentioning the rather life-altering situations that come to encapsulate who she is!

"You killed six goblins?" said Milton.  "How?"
[Sparky] shrugged.  "A little magic, a little violence.  You know."

There was a LOT that occurs during the course of this book; tons of different moving parts, all seemingly random, but ultimately mostly interrelated; diverse characters and settings and activities.  So much so that a summary of it would not even seem to make sense, but somehow most of the pieces fit together wonderfully, more so as the story progressed and more information came to light about a variety of things.  There were so many twists and turns that it was sometimes hard to keep up!  Many events occurred that were totally beyond the realm of what I would have anticipated.  Once again, the author did a wonderful job of incorporating the feeling of mayhem into this ongoing saga of a world thrust into the middle of it.

"Wow.  I really did not see that coming."
"I think it's fair to say no one saw this coming," said Dorothy."
"I'm happy for you," said Jessica.
"So am I.  Here's hoping we all make it out of here.  If I die two days after finally figuring out what I want, I am going to feel extremely swindled."

In case you couldn’t tell, I really enjoyed this book!  I totally recommend it!  And I can hardly wait for the next installment!

Publication date: January 23rd, 2018
Genres: Urban Fantasy, Young Adult
Syl Skye. Rouen Rivoche. Star-crossed lovers who should be mortal enemies. This is the story of how they met.
A nightly excursion to DC. A goth-rock show. One innocent train ride. That’s all it takes for high school sophomore Syl Skye’s perfectly normal world to come crashing down.
Because unbeknownst to her, she’s a sleeper-princess of the fair Fae—a vessel of Fae power that has yet to Awaken—and there are dark Fae who want her dead, dead, dead.
Rouen Rivoche is one of those dark Fae. Bound to the Agravaine the dark Fae Huntsman who is dedicated to wiping out all sleeper-princesses, Rouen has no choice but to hunt Syl down and spill her blood.
But a chance meeting in a nightclub, a brush of their hands, a lingering look… Despite herself, Rouen is attracted to Syl. And when she lets Syl get away…that’s when their troubles really begin.
After all, every couple has their issues, right?
Find out how Syl and Rouen met in this new prequel novella to MORIBUND, Book 1 of the Circuit Fae…

Excerpt:

In this scene, Syl and her squad are at a club where Euphoria’s playing. Syl’s never seen Euphoria, and she’s excited, but Fiann’s acting weird, treating Syl poorly and trying to bully her into double-dating the Dickinson twins, Brody and Bryce. Syl ducks into the bathroom to catch her breath.
* * * *
I take a deep breath and pat the nail where it rests secretly against my skin. Okay, Syl. It’s go-time. I shove the door open. Head held high, I step out into the flashing lights of the club, and bam! run right into someone.
“Steady on.” Strong hands keep me from falling on my butt, and during our awkward two-step, I catch a glimpse of raven-dark hair and sapphire-blue eyes ringed in gold. Her deep chuckle is like rolling thunder.
“I-I’m sorry.” I look up, brushing my red curls out of my face.
Whoa. My poor heart. She’s gorgeous. Her eyes are all intense and glowy as she searches my face. The ache in my chest gets worse—but also, somehow better.
What is happening? I reach out and touch her hand. Where I want to feel skin, I feel the leather of a glove.
Still, a jolt passes between us.
She lingers, her pretty face a bit dazed. She looks from our touching hands back up. “You…”
She feels it too. Whatever it is.
And dear heaven and all the angels, she’s… Wow. She’s something else. High cheekbones, full lips curved into a smile that’s part mischief, part mayhem. Her bronze skin holds an inner glow even in the dim light of the club, and those eyes… When she looks at me, the club, the flashing lights, all the people—everything falls away and there is only the two of us.
“Who are you?” she whispers, and I hear it because she’s leaned in close, so close I can feel her warm breath on my cheek.
“I…” Introduce yourself already! But I’m all tongue-tied, frozen like the world’s biggest dork. My fingers find the strip of skin between her glove and her sleeve. Ohhhh…so warm and silky, and… What the heck are you doing, Syl?
She chuckles again, more rumbly, rolling thunder. “Are you all right?”
Yes. No. Urgggg… I step back, my cheeks on fire. She smells like all the good things in autumn—crisp leaves and harvest moons and sultry bourbon vanilla. Whoa. I’m getting a little swoony. “I-I’m fine. Really. Are you?”
“Yes, but I’d like to…” She swallows hard, seeming almost shy beneath her super-cool exterior. She licks her bottom lip, and I nearly pass out right there. “Will you meet me after the show?”
Did mine ears deceive me? Girl works fast! Plus, I can tell she’s at least a year older than me. “I…” Say something, silly!
“I’m sorry.” She pulls her hand from mine and steps away.
The loss of her touch leaves me cold. Moments from losing her to the crowd, I pluck up my courage. “What’s your name?”
That smile curves her lips like a kept secret. “I’m Euphoria.”
Euphoria. Whaaaaaaaaatttt? Seriously, Syl, only you could carry on an entire freakin conversation with your goth idol and not even recognize her.
But no…there’s something else, some other reason I didn’t recognize her right off the bat. I just can’t put my finger on it. Plus, I’m still swoony.
“I have to go.” She leans in, whispers in my ear, “After?”
I feel like only my heart can answer that question, but before I can even blink, she’s gone. Like gone-gone. One moment she’s in front of me; the next she’s vanished. Poof!
Euphoria. And she wants to see me “after.”
Crazy. This is crazy.
I shade my eyes from the blue-and-red houselights and look to the stage. After about ten minutes, the house music fades away, and the stage goes dark.
A lone silhouette appears there, backlit. It’s her.
Heat races through my body, my hand tingling from her touch. My stomach does a lazy barrel-roll, and those butterflies everyone’s always told me about? Yeah, apparently mine are Olympic gymnasts, because my whole stomach feels like it’s going for the Gold.
Oooookay. Chill out. I touch the iron nail beneath my dress. Gotta thank Glamma for the lucky pendant.
I step out of the bathroom and beeline toward the stage. I feel feverish, mad as hatter and a March hare all rolled into one.
I only know this: I have to see her again.
I’ve always hated crowds, but without another thought, I push my way to the stage. Toward Euphoria, and toward the “after” that will bring me back to her.

Author Bio:
Raised by witches and dragons in the northern wilds, GIE writes angsty urban fantasy YA romance--where girls who are mortal enemies kick butt, take names, and fall in love against all odds.
She enjoys long hikes in the woods (where better to find the fair folk?), believing in fairies (in fact, she's clapping right now), dancing with dark elves (always wear your best shoes), being a self-rescuing princess (hello, black belt!), and writing diverse books about teenage girls finding love, romance, and their own inner power.
She might be planning high tea at the Fae Court now.
GIE is multi-published, and in her role as an editor has helped hundreds of authors make their dream of being published a reality.
