~AUTHOR INTERVIEW with D. G. Driver~
- What gave you the inspiration for the storyline?
Once upon a time I was an actress in a
touring theater production of The Three Musketeers. I had to travel in this
cramped van all over California with some of the most awful, selfish,
mean-spirited people I've ever met. Only two other actors in the troupe were
nice. I originally wrote a short story about a woman suffering through a
horrendous carriage ride and based all the characters on those people. It
turned out to be more of a scene than a full story. I eventually came up with
how she got on that carriage and where she went afterward, and that became the
much longer more epic fairy tale "The Hallway of Three Doors".
- Are any of the characters based on real people you
know?
All of the characters from the City of
Frivolity in the story are based on people who toured with me. I don't know
them any longer, and I'm mostly glad of that. I might have made them a little
worse than they actually were. None of the actors were ever thrown out of the
van or stabbed.
- If you could have any three literary characters over to your place for game night, who would you invite, what would you play, what would you serve, and why?
Okay, so I am a terrible introvert, and game
nights make me super uncomfortable. I think I have to confess that before I go
on to answer your question. That said, I think I'd invite Cinderella, Snow
White, and Rapunzel over. We'd have a big game of Scavenger Hunt through the
neighborhood, just so they could get out, move around, and meet some people.
I'd treat them to some pure junk food: pizza, sodas, beer, desserts. They
deserve it, poor girls. Then we'd have a big brainstorm about how they could
better their living situations before they went home.
- Do you feel that you can ever have too many books?
No. I
have more books than I can read, and I keep getting more. I like a wide variety
of books, too, so that doesn't help. There are books I just want to read. There
are books people recommend to me. There are books that I can get signed by
authors at festivals or the local bookstore. There are books by authors I've
met online (and all those authors write so many books). I will never catch up,
I know, but I won't be stopped.

Wow! It's so interesting to hear the inspiration behind the story! I really enjoyed reading it in the anthology and glad to know that the characters were worse then the actors. That would have been horrible!
