A princess fleeing an arranged marriage teams up with a snarky commoner to foil a rebel plot in B. R. Myers’ Rogue Princess, a gender-swapped sci-fi YA retelling of Cinderella.
Princess Delia knows her duty: She must choose a prince to marry in order to secure an alliance and save her failing planet. Yet she secretly dreams of true love, and feels there must be a better way. Determined to chart her own course, she steals a spaceship to avoid the marriage, only to discover a handsome stowaway.
All Aidan wanted was to “borrow” a few palace trinkets to help him get off the planet. Okay, so maybe escaping on a royal ship wasn’t the smartest plan, but he never expected to be kidnapped by a runaway princess!
Sparks fly as this headstrong princess and clever thief battle wits, but everything changes when they inadvertently uncover a rebel conspiracy that could destroy their planet forever.
~AUTHOR INTERVIEW with B.R. Myers~
1) What gave you the inspiration for the storyline?
The
idea for Rogue Princess came to me while I was writing a story in which the
main character was working on a perfume campaign. The ad was a reimagining
of Rapunzel, but instead of a princess being kept in a tower it was a
businessman trapped in a high rise office building. After those
characters found their happily ever after I started thinking about my
next project. The notion of another gender swapped retelling appealed
to me and right away I thought of Cinderella. I hadn’t intended to have
a sci-fi angle to the story, but I clearly remember the ‘shoe fits’ scene
coming to me fully developed, and I was intrigued.
2) Are there any hidden (or not so hidden) themes in the book
that you hope readers will discover?
True
love will always find a way! I hope readers are entertained, startled and satisfied.
3) Are any of the characters based on real people you know?
No one complete personality, but I do take bits and pieces
from real life and put it into my books.
4) Who has influenced you most as a writer?
Ho boy! This is such a tough question. It really depends on
what story I’m writing because inspiration comes from all around. It could be music
I hear on the radio, or a conversation I overhear on the bus, or even something
the yoga teacher says in class. I take whatever I’m meant to have, or rather
what my story needs. Whatever inspires my life, inspires my writing.
5) If you could have any three literary characters over to your place for game night, who would you invite, what would you play, what would you serve, and why?
Ron Weasley
Mr. Darcy
Gilbert Blythe
I’d invite my three biggest book crushes over for nachos and
beer then play a rousing game of charades. Good times will be had by all.
6) Do you feel that you can ever have too many books?
Never! Although I do go through my shelves regularly and pick
out the books I probably won’t read again. I pass those along to friends or I
donate them to women’s and teens’ shelters.
