With my original storyline in the Dark Rising Trilogy, I asked
myself what would happen if evil wizards took over the world. In many magical
stories, the good characters win, but what if they lost? This question helped
me build the world for my Dark Rising Trilogy.
In book two, Unholy Sundering, I drew my inspiration from my love
of water. My characters find a powerful magician whose strength is in water,
and the majority of the novel takes place sea side. Growing up in Arizona, I
was in the pool every chance I could get and became a synchronized swimmer,
competing at the national level. If I must pick a power or affinity with magic
it would definitely be water.
2) Are there any hidden themes in the
book that you hope readers will discover?
I love secondary characters. We only
glimpse their lives in stories, but if you look close enough you see love,
loss, not always happy endings, and a story in and of itself. I hope my readers
enjoy the stories and themes with my secondary characters that are not fully
explored on the page.
3) Are any of the characters based on
real people you know?
If I told you, I may have to kill
you. Haha. There may be snippets of people from my life in my books. A look
here or a temperament there, but no one even those close to me would be able to
figure it out. One exception was in my last science-fiction novel, HOOKED. I
named a kind nurse after one of my good friends who was an excellent and kind
nurse as well.
4) Who has influenced you most as a
writer?
Other writers, starting back when I
was a child. I still remember reading Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry when I was
in fifth grade and being blown away. Books have been my escape, my inspiration,
and my bliss for so many years. I love to re-read some of my favorites, like
Patricia Briggs, for comfort and others, like Ray Bradbury who move me on so
many levels. Now I have friends who are
writers and they help me just as much with the craft and my motivation. I love
story tellers!
5) If you could have any three
literary characters over to your place for game night, who would you invite,
what would you play, what would you serve, and why?
1: The Marrok from the world of
Patricia Briggs, Moon Called Series. He is the most powerful werewolf around
and has lived for a couple centuries, but often looks like a bored teenage boy.
I’d love to talk history with him and have always found a fascinating
character.
2: The Weasley Twins from Harry
Potter because I love to laugh. Yes, I’m only counting them as one.
3: Jaime from Outlander. Because I’ve
never swooned before and want to try it out.
I’d want to play three truths and a
lie. Then maybe an alcohol laced game of charades. I’d probably barbeque. You
can’t go wrong with grilled steak and veggies.
6) Do you feel that you can ever have
too many books?
Is that a trick question? My answer
is NEVER. Some people hoard food, wanting a year supply. I hoard books in case
there is an electrical shortage or zombie apocalypse, and I need them to
maintain my sanity. Stories bring flavor
to life, and I wouldn’t want to imagine a world without them.
