Until now, the map was only the stuff of legend… but with its help, Grace may finally be able to hunt down the Mordgris, the sea monsters who stole her mother away from her.
Unfortunately, some members of her crew have other plans…
To find the map and face the Mordgris, Grace will have to confront her past, put the Luck between warring nations, and uncover treachery aboard the ship. And ultimately, her revenge and the destruction of the Mordgris will come at a hefty price: the betrayal of her crew.
Grace promised them they wouldn’t regret this.
She just isn’t sure that she won’t.

1) What gave you the
inspiration for the storyline?
The
main inspiration for Over Raging Tides came as I watched Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black
Pearl and was irritated as I mulled over the fact that Keira Knightley’s
character is the only key female character.
What
if there were more? I thought. What if there was an entire crew of female pirates for the world to contend with?
Shortly
after, a vivid scene for Over Raging
Tides jumped into my head. I jotted it down immediately. No spoilers, but,
it made it to the final draft!
2) Are there any hidden
themes in the book that you hope readers will discover?
Hmmm…
not really hidden “themes” per se, but I dropped some foreshadowing for certain
things that I hope they’ll pick up on! Some clues’ meaning will be clear by the
book’s end; others by the duology’s end.
3) Are any of the
characters based on real people you know?
I
wish! I know many bad-ass ladies in real life, but unfortunately I don’t know
any lady pirates.
4) Who has influenced
you most as a writer?
Tamora
Pierce by a landslide. I couldn’t begin to count how many times I read and
reread her books as a teen. My copy of Alanna:
The First Adventure is very well-loved.
Pierce’s cast of (mostly) female fantasy heroes inspires me to this day.
5) If you could have
any three literary characters over to your place for game night, who would you
invite, what would you play, what would you serve, and why?
I’d
invite Hermione Granger (J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter), Veralidaine “Daine” Sarrasri
(Tamora Pierce’s The Immortals), and Cress (Marissa Meyer’s The Lunar
Chronicles).
We’d
play Taboo because it’s a favorite game of mine and I bet Hermione would be
fantastic at it—getting teammates to guess a word while explaining it in an
“out of the box” way is a fun mental challenge.
I’d
serve Baked Brie with raspberry jam and crackers—another favorite of mine and
always a crowd pleaser… I just hope that none of my guests are
lactose-intolerant! *fingers crossed*
6) Do you feel that you
can ever have too many books?
My
gut instinct is to say “no.” But on thinking a little more, if you find
yourself literally up to your neck in books… it may be time to cull your
shelves. ^_~
