Clio is good at all sorts of things. As a nymph, she’s great at outdoorsy nature stuff. As a nymph living in exile, she’s got the “blending in with humans” thing down pat. As a nymph living in exile because she possesses the rare ability to mimic magic, she’s had to pick up some unique survival skills.
But stealing from the most dangerous spell weavers in the Underworld? Not so much.
Unfortunately, that’s exactly what she has to do to earn a ticket back home. Conning her way into the night realm may have gone pretty well, but now she’s got a new problem. His name is Lyre and he’s a sinfully alluring incubus, a dangerously skilled spell weaver, and the only thing standing between her and stealing some damn magic.
Maneuvering around him without blowing her cover shouldn’t be that difficult, but chaos has been dogging her every step, monsters hide behind beautiful faces, and Lyre keeps saving her neck even though they’re enemies. Kind of enemies? Either way, her mission is getting complicated fast, and in the Underworld, even one mistake could prove fatal.
~AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Annette Marie~
1) What gave you the inspiration for the storyline?
The Night Realm’s storyline actually came from my first series Steel
& Stone! The Night Realm tells the origin story of Lyre, a flirtatious and
mysterious incubus, and takes place five years before the Steel & Stone
series begins. Though the two series are connected, The Night Realm is a
standalone adventure that anyone can read without any knowledge of my other series.
:)
2) Are there any hidden themes in the book that you hope readers will
discover?
It’s not really a theme, but one thing I spent a kind of silly amount
of time on, and that I hope readers might notice, are some character names.
Lyre has six brothers: Andante, Ariose, Madrigal, Reed, Dulcet, and Viol.
Notice a common theme? I did a lot of Googling to pick out names with musical
meanings that also fit the characters.
3) Are any of the characters based on real people you know?
I sometimes take small inspirations from real people—a mannerism, a
habit, a speech pattern, a favorite phrase—but all my characters are straight
from my imagination.
4) Who has influenced you most as a writer?
That’s a tough question! I can’t pick just one person, but every author
I’ve ever read has influenced me in some way. There’s always something new to
learn—a trick for foreshadowing, a scene with expertly built tension, a
character so real they seem to walk off the page. With every book I read, I
refine my own skills a little more.
5) If you could have any three literary characters over to your place
for game night, who would you invite, what would you play, what would you
serve, and why?
Any three characters? I’d have to pick my own, just because it was be
so cool to meet them outside my own head. I’d invite Lyre from The Night Realm
because, I mean, he’s a smokin’ hot incubus. I wanna see that with my own eyes!
I’d invite Miysis from my Steel & Stone series; this choice might surprise
my fans, but I’d choose him because he’s fascinating—a desert prince—and I
didn’t get to explore his history as much as I’d have liked in the series. And
third, I’d invite Shiro from my Red Winter trilogy; he’s hands-down the most
fun character I’ve ever had the pleasure of writing, so of course I want to
meet him.
As for a game, I don’t really know because I’m pretty sure those guys
could beat me at absolutely anything. But food is easy! It’d have to be a giant
meat tray. They’re all kind of... carnivorous. ;)
Author Bio:
Annette Marie is the author of the Amazon best-selling Steel & Stone series, which includes Goodreads Choice Award nominee Yield the Night, and fantasy trilogy Red Winter. Her first love is fantasy, but fast- paced urban fantasy and tantalizing forbidden romances are her guilty pleasures. She lives in the frozen winter wasteland of Alberta, Canada (okay, it's not quite that bad) with her comparatively sensible husband and their furry minion of darkness—sorry, cat—Caesar. When not writing, she can be found elbow-deep in one art project or another while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.
Thanks for hosting today, Jen!
